A Girlie Guide to Film Archiving

8

Are your desk drawers overflowing with billions of unmarked envelopes of negatives? Well if you love Post-Its, Sharpies, tape and scissors, here’s a cool, and SUPER organized way to store your negatives!

Now here’s what you’ll need:

  • White Paper/ Looseleaf paper (with the edges cut off)
  • Colorful Post-Its
  • Sharpie/ any old pen
  • Tape

STEP 1: Tape the two sheets of paper together.
You may need to tape more sheets together depending on how many strips of negatives you want to archive. A usual roll of 120 / roll of 35mm (24 exposures) will take 2 sheets.

STEP 2: Put each negative strip into a plastic sleeve.
If you don’t have plastic sleeves, you could always line the white paper with a softer paper (like tracing paper). But you don’t have to… when the lab doesn’t give me any sleeves, I totally just skip this step and my negatives have never been harmed.

STEP 3: Fold the paper over each negative
Start at the top by putting the first negative on the paper and fold the top edge over it. Fold it down again, then place a new negative strip on the paper. Fold the paper over that negative and keep going until all your negatives are safe and sound in the little paper strip you’ve just made.

STEP 4: Make the Post-It Labels
You can label your paper strip any way you want, but I make labels for the: Date, Film used, Camera used and Album title/ description

STEP 5: Tape the labels

Step 6: Store them in a box or drawer.
Something that will stay out of direct sunlight or heat.

So there you have it! This technique of organizing your negatives allows you to, at a glance, see all the main information about each roll you shoot… and it’s pretty too!! :)

lovely! make it even better by using recycled paper to fold it in (as long as you have the plastic sleeve!) to make it a little shabby-chic and eco-friendly! :)

Love it!! Just did this with pages from magazines/catalogs I had lying around instead of the notebook paper. Thanks for the idea! Looks great!
