Obtaining Horizontal Pictures

Square photos are so balanced that it is very comfortable and delighted to look at, therefore, it is necessary to be able to shoot horizontally.

I like to use 120 cameras, in which 6×6 films are filled so that photos developed are in square shapes. For compositions in square, the advantage is that you do not have to decide whether to take the photo horizontally or vertically before you shoot. For 35 mm cameras, sometimes you just take 2 pictures, one horizontally and one vertically, just to save us time and to avoid delaying and missing a chance to take great photos.

When I look at all the square photos on my desk, exposure is not a problem. But the fact that they are not exactly horizontal affects the quality of the photos. That is such a pity! Square photo is so balanced that it is very comfortable and delighted to look at, therefore, it is necessary to be able to shoot horizontally. When I am taking those photos, I really seriously tried to be horizontal, though usually couldn’t get that. After thinking a lot, I finally came up with a trick. Using Lubitel 166+ as an example, it will become very easy to be horizontal with your compositions. I will share it with you in the following.

Step 1: take off the viewfinder
Step 2: on the frame of the viewfinder, from the bottom to top, marks every 5mm.
Step 3: depends on whether you want it, from the top to bottom, marks similarly as the previous step.
Step 4: when you shoot, match the horizon with the first pair of marks on both left and right. Or, you can choose to match with the second or third pair of marks.

Pictures are paralleled with the horizons.

Horizons are not very obvious in the photos:

Pictures are tilted intentionally to create the sense of motion:
