Shooting Sunsets: The Classic Breathtaking Photo

6

Looking through my photos collection, I noticed that a large amount of them were shots of the sunset. And every single one was like a no-brainer winner. Aim at the horizon and snap a photo to guarantee a breathtaking freezeframe!

Everyone knows that visual beauty can always be found in nature. The rustling of grand tress, the flight of glorious birds down south, the unmistakable bloom of a flower — there’s so much to shoot, to see, to appreciate. For me, sometimes I struggle to get that “perfect shot,” whether it would be because of incorrect exposure, my shaky hands, or just incorrect framing and timing. But no matter what, I can always rely upon the amazing sunset to give me that classic shot my Lomography heart is driven for.

Above is my first ever analogue sunset shot. Taken with my Smena 8M, which is not the most technically reliable camera to use, I can still say that I love that shot.

The warm glow from the radiating, setting sun is perfect to illuminate the exposure. Instead of a harsh shine from the sun at noon, the effervescent sunset is my choice of off camera lighting to the tee.

Now most of you experienced Lomographers may be thinking, “Oh, sunsets… how cliche, this is a waste of a tipster.” But wait! There really shouldn’t be cliches around on this community — everyone’s perspective is crucial to the integrity that binds us Lomographers to a core mindset. Just because the sunset is an easy way to get that perfect shot, doesn’t make it worth any less. If anything, that’s made me strive to get different views of the beloved sunset — I’ll try to make each shot fresh and display the natural beauty of the sunset.

So next time, if you like, try to take a few shots of the nature given sunset! You won’t be disappointed.

Doug DuBois on My Last Day at Seventeen

Doug DuBois spent five summers photographing the small neighborhood of Russell Heights in Ireland to capture the essence of coming of age: the inevitable loss of youth and the imminent transition into adulthood. Those four years resulted in his latest book, My Last Day At Seventeen. The book is a visual tale told through a collection of photographs and gives an alternative perspective through a comic narrative around the same subject. This creative combination of two distinct narratives in one book not only works wonderfully in visual terms; it also serves as an essential tool that lets the reader dig deeper into the story being told, making one go back to the book over and over again, yet from a new perspective, every single time.
