A TV show about art, activism, and political prank, Banksy’s The Antics Roadshow recently aired on Channel 4 in the UK. It featured amongst others, the work of the mysterious Paris-based guerilla artist Princess Hijab.
Princess Hijab’s work is simple in concept, her approach, analogue. Her weapon of choice? A jumbo marker and nothing else. Oh, and yes, someone else’s ad to scribble on. Major brands have fallen victim to Princess Hijab’s jumbo marker including Dolce & Gabbana, Virgin, Arena, and H&M.
What does Princess Hajib do? She blacks out faces and bodies and in so doing, gifts the scantly clad models with a burqa or a veil.
In my opinion the ads look way cooler after her intervention but what she does isn’t as straightforward as doodling a mustache on a politician’s photo on a newspaper. No, there are implications. Mostly, the innuendos are out to send a strong message to the French government who recently banned the niqab from public spaces.
The French guerrilla artist whose identity remains a secret, notwithstanding the fact that she has been doing this for a while, is out to make a point and all she needs to make it is one marker.
