Al Qala'a Handicraft Souk, Oman

Apart from the usual malls and commercial establishments in Sohar, I wanted to see something unique that the town has to offer, and found this souk after hours on Flickr. One afternoon, I was able to locate it just a 5-minute drive from the city centre.

The compound can accommodate more than a dozen shops, only six were operational, which include gunsmiths, silversmiths and an herbal medicine store. I could spend hours admiring antique finds, handicrafts, and the like here. The shopkeepers’ were accommodating enough to tell us where their goods and some trivial information. I was fortunate enough to see an artisan at work on a khanjar, a curved dagger that is part of Oman’s national emblem. With so much interesting trinkets, I ended up buying most of the souvenirs from my trip here.
