Behind the Scenes: Jaws, 1975

6

In observance of the shark week, why don't we kickoff with some behind the scenes photos of the quintessential shark flick, Steven Spielberg's Jaws from 1975!

Once upon 1975, American movie director, screenwriter, and producer Steven Spielberg unleashed a horror-thriller film that would later be dubbed as a classic summer flick and one of the most terrifying movies of all time. It was Jaws, which grabbed curious moviegoers with its horrifying poster alone.

Jaws was based on a novel of the same title by Peter Benchley, and tells about the plight of a fictional summer resort town plagued by attacks of an enormous man-eating great white shark. It was a huge success, and was the first of Spielberg’s films that would become certified box office hits at the time of their release. The lucky shark brought Spielberg not only household name status, but also three Academy Awards and more than $470 million in ticket sales worldwide.

However, the filming of the Spielberg thriller masterpiece was never a breeze, and like its fictional town, was also plagued with tough challenges of its own. The acclaimed filmmaker called the arduous shoot his “professional crucible”, as it was nearly called off due to budget problems and delays.

Now, why don’t we take a look at some interesting behind-the-scenes photos from the filming of the epic shark movie? In most of these photos, we see the mechanical sharks the cast and crew lovingly called “Bruce.” There’s also one interesting shot of the young Spielberg fooling around, sitting in Bruce’s jaws!

Like everyone else, I have always been afraid of sharks after watching this movie as a kid. And the Jaws theme still gets me feeling panicky!

Those who watched it in drive-in theatres are really lucky, I've always wanted to experience that!
