My first LomoOuting started here, the Dataran Merdeka. It is located in Kuala Lumpur, the largest city of Malaysia. "Dataran" means "square". Meanwhile "Merdeka" is the most powerful word for every country, which means "independence".
My first LomoOuting started here, the Dataran Merdeka. It is located in Kuala Lumpur, the largest city of Malaysia. “Dataran” means “square”. Meanwhile “Merdeka” is the most powerful word for every country, which means “independence”.
Let me tell you why this place is so meaningful to me. Just have a look at my photo of 5 portraits – they were and are our Prime Ministers. The 1st Prime Minister (one the left portrait), Tunku Abdul Rahman, also called “Bapa Malaysia” – Father of Malaysia, was elected on the 31st August, 1957 on the day of our independence. On that day the Malayan flag was hoisted for the first time and Tunku Abdul Rahman led the crowd in announcing “Merdeka!”.
Freedom had just begun right here! Surrounding the square are many buildings of historical value. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building was among the most significant landmarks built by the British, which grandly overlooks the Dataran Merdeka. Topped by a shiny copper dome and a 40m high clock tower, it is a major landmark in the city. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building now houses the Commercial Division of the High Court of Malaya. Now, every year on this special day, Dataran Merdeka will be the place for the Independence Day celebration. Many of local people and the tourist also will join the crowd enjoying the countdown moment.
There will be also of course the firecrackers, marching bands, concert and much more of the Merdeka events will be just waiting for you. Kuala Lumpur nowadays has very good transportation facilities. You can get into this place easily by transit LRT, bus, taxi or even walking if you like to walk with your cameras.
Some more, the road in front of The Sultan Abdul Rahman Building will be blocked or closed for not allowing the drivers to pass through. This is the chance for lomographers to “Don’t think, just shoot!”. You can walk down the street showing your styles everywhere. Until now, when I looked at the Sultan Abdul Samad Building on any media or photo, my brain automatically tells me, “Merdeka!!!”. Dataran Merdeka, the landmarks where Malaysia was born!
