With ultra high ISO, fairly fine grain and super saturated colours, Fuji Natura 1600 is the ultimate colour negative film of choice for low light photography.

Fujifilm released a special film, Natura 1600, when it launched the first of the Natura series of cameras, Natura S, back in 2004. Before lomography introduced the Natura Classica to its online shop recently, the Natura cameras and the Natura 1600 film are exclusively available in Japan. Luckily I got my hands on a few rolls of Natura 1600 film together with my Natura Classica camera in Tokyo in 2006.

According to Fujifilm, Natura cameras produce the best results when using the specially developed Natura 1600 film. Up to now, I have only used the film with my Natura Classica and am very pleased with the results. The film boasts superb colour saturation. Despite its ultra high ISO, Natura 1600 film does not generate as much grain as you might think, even in low-light conditions. Of course you can use the film under sunlight too although personally I don’t recommend that (What a waste of the precious film to shoot under bright sunlight when there are a wide range of slower and cheaper films available!). Just keep in mind your pictures may be somewhat overexposed in case of too much sunlight (on the beach for instance).

There is speculation on flickr saying that Natura 1600 is the same thing as Superia 1600 or Press 1600, just rebranded. I have no way to affirm or deny that speculation, but based on my personal experience, I would say it is not very likely. Natura 1600 tends to be less grainy and more colour saturate than other ISO1600 films produced by Fuji.
