LC-A+ Wide-Angle Lens: Broaden Your Views!

2

You don't know what you're missing until it is attached to your LC-A+, and then you find it hard to take off! A true must-have accessory if you love your LC-A+, but it still leaves some things to be desired...

I knew I wanted the LC-A+ Wide Angle Lens when I first saw it in the shop. I’ve owned a real big Canon EOS 400D camera once, with a gorgeous 10-22mm lens I believe, and suddenly everything was 10x more interesting! A wide-angle lens blows your views wide open and makes you want to play Where’s Waldo since you fit so much in the frame.

I’m going to call it WAL from now on. And WAL, I like you! I didn’t however like the price of it, so I was sure to buy it with a big load of piggies and for that I am very glad, because there are a few things that could’ve been done much better, considering the price-tag.

I really don’t like the very soft rubber lens cap — it attracts dust like a vacuum-cleaner and the rubber causes a lot of friction with i.e. the lining of your bag — it might easily come off, so I always have the camera lie on its back in my bag.

Another thing I would’ve liked to see is a filter for it — especially since it looks to be able to take one.
Filters are wonderful things, you can get simple, clear UV filters that don’t change the light or color of your frames – but just keeps the lens protected from scratches etc. It is much easier to replace a cheap filter than repair a very expensive lens. If Lomography launches a neat little filter for the WAL — I’ll buy it in a sec!

The last downside is that the little switch that secures the lens to the camera feels like it could be easily knocked out of place and before you know it the lens could fly in the ground. That’s why I always have the lens-cap of the LC-A+ OPEN all the time when I have the WAL on — so that I won’t have to open it and accidentally move the WAL secure switch out of place (they get very close).

The way the special viewfinder screws on to the hotshoe feels much better and I wish it had been the same thing for securing the WAL itself.

But now to the fun stuff!

Indoors or outdoors – it loves both!

The viewfinder takes in more than what will actually end up on the frame, so if you want to be sure to have it on the frame — don’t have it all the way out on the edge.
If you don’t want the subject to be distorted – keep it in center.

Hipshots, close-ups, whatever you can think of — this lens is game!

Just be aware that the focus setting on the WAL is a lot different from the LC-A+! Always keeping the focus on infinite might be a good if you want to be sure to have crisp pictures!

The WAL focuses this way:

0,35m
0,7m
1,5m
>1,5m

It’s a wonderful accessory, but if you’re unsure of the price, write some articles and save some piggies and then you’ll be just as happy as me. :)

Useful Guidelines on Shooting with Ultra Wide Lenses

Wide-angle lens are further divided into sub-classifications: Wide, ultra-wide and ultra-ultra-wide. Based on current standards, wide lenses for 35mm cameras are those with focal lengths ranging from 24 to 35mm. Lenses are considered ultra-wide if they have focal lengths from 17 to 21 mm, and ultra-ultra-wide if from 12 to 16mm. The New Russar+ is a 20mm lens; hence it falls under the ultra-wide classification. If you have an ultra-wide lens or if you intend to get the Russar+, you might as well make the most out of your precious investment. Read on for a few guidelines on shooting with ultra-wide lenses.

If you want to know the heart of a person, peek inside his/her wardrobe! And no, nobody famous said that; I only just made it up. But really, don't you think it's true? After all, the way we dress screams our personality; at least for most of us. And that is why, as soon as I land on a new city, one of the things I absolutely must do is find the local boutiques. Sure, I love the fancy chain boutiques as much as the next person, but there's just something else about a local clothing store. It's unique!
