Aveiro - The Portuguese Venice!

4

Last summer, I was bored out of my mind, so I called up a friend of mine and we decided to take a trip on the very next day. Destination? Aveiro! We were a little bit ashamed for not knowing this wonderful city very well, considering it’s just an hour away from Porto, by train. So off we go!Known as the "Portuguese Venice", the city of Aveiro is crossed by many canals, surrounded by salt-flats, lagoons and beaches and dominated by the Central Canal running through town.

We were a little bit ashamed for not knowing this wonderful city very well, considering it’s just an hour away from Porto, by train. So off we go!Known as the “Portuguese Venice”, the city of Aveiro is crossed by many canals, surrounded by salt-flats, lagoons and beaches and dominated by the Central Canal running through town.

Of all the boats seen in the area, the “moliceiro” is the most famous and elegant, painted with bright colours and with often ingenious and humorous decorations. For a small amount of money, you can go for a ride on these cool boats and enjoy the view! I know I did! ;)

The city is famous for its production of salt. But here comes the best part: Aveiro is specially known for its sweets! The most famous is “ovos moles” (or soft eggs), sweetened egg yolk in candied casings shaped like fish or barrels. They’re divine, trust me! You can buy them in almost every supermarket in Portugal, but they don’t compare to the ones you can eat in Aveiro. It was definitely an unforgettable trip!
