The Vice Photo Book

1

The history of photography, as told through the best photographs to have graced the pages of Vice Magazine. We hear the coffee table book is as arousing as a double shot espresso.

The Vice Photo Book is a compilation of ten year’s worth of editorials, fashion spreads and photo stories from the famously irreverent, free magazine. Obviously, most of them are analogue.

The 336 pages feature the likes of wunderkind photographer Ryan McGinley and the late Polaroid junkie Dash Snow.

And here is where I leave you with a surprisingly innocent pair (by Vice standards) care of Angela Boatwright.

Doug DuBois on My Last Day at Seventeen

Doug DuBois spent five summers photographing the small neighborhood of Russell Heights in Ireland to capture the essence of coming of age: the inevitable loss of youth and the imminent transition into adulthood. Those four years resulted in his latest book, My Last Day At Seventeen. The book is a visual tale told through a collection of photographs and gives an alternative perspective through a comic narrative around the same subject. This creative combination of two distinct narratives in one book not only works wonderfully in visual terms; it also serves as an essential tool that lets the reader dig deeper into the story being told, making one go back to the book over and over again, yet from a new perspective, every single time.

A Look at Photographs on Auction at Lempertz

Two days from now, Lempertz will hold a sale of 195 photographic prints. The lineup is as varied as the history of photography itself. An 1856 print by an anonymous photographer is in the same group as a top-valued Joseph Szabo shot. A deceptively simple shot of a flower vase is joined by the complex textures of Lucien Hervé. Take a look at the fascinating mix.

Photographers on Why They Still Shoot Film (Part 2)

Another chases its risk or does it with a leap of faith. But the consensus is clear: Film photography keeps people on their toes for the best possible shot.
