Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

A place to escape busy city life, to relax, be in play mode on the weekends, and to stare and be in awe of peacocks.

The Los Angeles Arboretum is a 127-acre botanical garden and historic site, which is located just outside the city of Los Angeles. It is just a few minutes from Los Angeles and I see it as an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It is a great place to take a relaxing stroll along the hundreds of garden paths, lie in the Bauer Lawn or somewhere in front of Queen Anne’s Cottage or eat a sandwich amongst the different species of roses in the Victorian Rose Garden. And you can do all these while staring at peacocks. Yes, they are all over the place, strutting, displaying their beauty for all to see.

Arrogant creatures these peacocks are, but they are just so beautiful!

And so one Saturday afternoon last April, I took my mom to the Arboretum. She loved it she said maybe because she’s a plant person and was so in awe of the unique plants. Maybe because of the peacocks. Maybe because it was Wild West Days when we went, so there was a lot of music and dancing. But I think more because it is a place you wouldn’t expect to see in Los Angeles. I’m just glad she had a great time. And yes, I had fun too…

And I did relaxed…

Several of these old German fairground organs can be found in the Arboretum grounds.

It was Wild West days when we went so there was barn dancing and the dancers (and I think members of the Arboretum) were in full costumes.

I also took photos with my Diana Mini loaded with redscale film. Here are a few…

So if you live in L.A. County or even in Orange County and just want to relax, daydream, and maybe to take a nap, you should consider driving to the Arboretum. You won’t regret it.

Testing a Yashica TLR Camera After 55 Years in Storage

Though I am not a professional, photography is in my genes. My father was a photographer and technician in the Air Force and accumulated a number of cameras during his life. This is a story about one of those cameras, a Yashica 635 TLR. I brought the camera—after being in storage for about 55 years—back to life with a roll of Portra 160 during the golden hour at Bellevue Botanical Gardens in Washington.
