Reflections Don't Just Come from Mirrors

7

In which our hero admits his strong infatuation with reflections; both his own and those of objects. Or, using reflective surfaces, other than a typical mirror, to enhance the composition of your shots.

I’m relatively new to lomography. I’d taken analogue photos years ago, then got into the digital movement for instant gratification reasons. But, have since become disenchanted with the perfectly crisp immediate results.

Anywho, I’ve got this thing for reflections. It started with a picture of portable toilets where the tops got cut off in the frame, but were reflected in a puddle of water (above). There’s something about the shot that I didn’t realize until I got the prints. It’s just this odd, disjointed image that feels a bit surreal. After that, I was hooked.

I like to use things other than a traditional mirror. Corner mirrors are great for a somewhat skewed look. Old, dirty windows create an almost multiple exposure effect. I took a portrait of a friend of mine with a self portrait reflected in his mirrored aviator sunglasses. By far, though, my favorite reflective surface is water. Ponds and puddles make great additions to the composition of a shot.

During this rainy season, I’ve found myself staring at puddles in the alley and regretting not having my camera with me (I know – lomo rule broken, but I can’t have it at work).

So, make use of things that are readily available to you! Rain is free and I’m sure there are windows nearby somewhere. If all else fails, try a side-view mirror on your car. Feel free to share your reflective creations in the comments below. I’d be interested to see how others utilize this concept.
