In my part of the world, it’s summer. And while it’s fun to go to the beach, sometimes the heat would just make you want to stay in your room and watch a movie. So as May hits its stride, here are some movie releases that are as hot as their setting. Need I say more? Lock your room. Fly to Paris. Bring your camera. So when you're physically there, you got it all covered!
Midnight in Paris
First, it’s directed by Woody Allen. Well let’s not expect another Manhattan or Annie Hall. But I’d be happy enough to know if it’s at least at par with Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Starring Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Adrien Brody, Marion Cotillard, Carla Bruni, and Kathy Bates—the plot revolves in a family business trip to Paris. The cast alone can make any moviegoer swoon, and with a movie poster backlit by Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” you’d be set to unleash your inner aesthete.
Challenge # 1: When you’re in Paris, try to achieve your photographic version of van Gogh’s paintings!
This film is not shot in Paris but Joanna’s (Keira Knightley) previous French flame Alex (Guillaume Canet) visits her in New York where they rekindle some sparks. The problem is Joanna is married to Michael (Sam Worthington) who’s at his wit’s end at fighting his attraction to his co-worker Laura (Eva Mendes). All are at perils with their luck. The question is: who ends up with whom?
Challenge #2: You can sneak around like a paparazzi. You might uncover some dark secrets in the city.
Finally, here’s a true story. It’s about French fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent and his lover Pierre Berge. Pierre Thoretton’s documentary narrates the rise of the YSL fashion house. With interviews and archive footages of people like Catherine Deneuve, this movie rivets the audience with romance and history.
Challenge #3: In Paris, wear nice clothes, and take photos of yourself and your beautiful friends!
