I made a fairly recent discovery of a lovely suntrap up at Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire.
Cow and Calf Rocks in Ilkley is a large formation where one smaller piece of rock historically split from the larger formation. It is a lovely place for a dog walk, a rock climb or just a lazy afternoon picnic.
It is situated at Ilkley Moor and located conveniently close to a main road and as a result, it is easily accessible. It also has a free car park so that’s a bonus! It is not a challenging walk for novices or indeed a challenging climb for those with limited experience. There is a nice opening in the centre, almost like a small but extreme valley, which catches the sun beautifully and makes a great spot for sunbathing and having a picnic, or just an ice cream.
There is a lovely little shop/cafe at the bottom near the car park which sells limited food, drinks, and more excitingly, postcards, souvenir teatowels and a bit of clotted cream fudge – mmmmmm!
All in all, I would say that this interesting rock formation just outside Ilkley is well worth a visit.
