We Have a Technical – Our Community Site Will Be Down Tomorrow for Two Hours

Sometimes we have to take the website down for a bit – be it a new version being deployed, some technical problem that needs to be fixed or a database being migrated. The latter is the case tomorrow morning (Vienna time), hence we have to take the site for about two hours.

This photo by tommynorth gets shown if there are some troubles on the site

The details again: we have to take the community site down for a database migration tomorrow morning between 10:00 and 12:00 Vienna time. We hope it will take less, but we just want to be on the safe side. This will only affect the community site, not the shop!

Given that you are reading this article we assume you spend quite a bit of time on this site. Thanks for doing so, it makes us happy and proud so many people visit our site daily! Especially if you have been around since the beginning you might have experienced some downtime, the site being slow, things taking forever, …

So what’s the process? Who is working on this site? Basically we are two designers and four programmers. We constantly work on the community and shop site: be it redesigns, bug fixing, new features, improving old features, working on feedback, trying out things in the playground, trying to make this a fun place for you to hang out – most of my articles either cover new features or random galleries if you wanna catch up.

Technically we are running on Ruby on Rails, with Postgres and MongoDB as a database. Most of the frontend is in XHTML strict, but we are tapping into HTML5, for JavaScript we use MooTools, for CSS files we use SASS (which I personally love a lot). We try to avoid Flash, but for the upload (multiple files) we still rely on it. The shop runs on Magento, with more or less the same frontend technology as the community site (but Prototype, instead of Mootools). We design on paper. Then refine it in photoshop sometimes, but more likely build it in HTML directly (saves us a lot of time).

That’s about it. Is there anything you want to know? Please ask us anything in the comments!

Oh, the article title refers to We Have A Technical by Matt Sharp & Damon Albarn (a Gary Numan cover version).

@kylewis: i know this is a pain – but as this is no script but someone putting in the work creating these comments even captchas won't help… we could limit commenting only to people who have uploaded, but that feels like leaving someone out… but we are on the issue!

There is a bunch of "Tipsters of the Week" still lost on scapegoat's Lomohome. Could they be placed on their proper owners Lomohomes, and the medals awarded. This has been lost for over a year. Thanx.

In the last days I can't post private messages and after the community site down, now I can't see new notifications ... is only a problem of my account or is connected to the work in progress of the community site? The only thing I can do is like :)

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.

So here’s what we’ve been working on: an all new lomography.com

For the last year we've been working on the next version of Lomography. We based our work on the feedback you’ve given us over the years and we wanted to share it as early as possible with you and can’t wait to hear what you think. Just one warning first: it is still in development and things can break. All the photos, comments, likes, homes and everything else were transferred as of October 16th, 2014. So anything you do on next.lomography.com won't be reflected on www.lomography.com and vice versa. Once we are done with testing, everything you did here will be deleted again. So this is a big playground for you to explore.
