Playa la Virgen was recently recognized as the best Chilean beach, and it's a perfect place to rest, have some outdoor adventures, go swimming and have some sun, even when summertime in the southern hemisphere is over!
The north of Chile is known mainly for the Atacama Desert, the driest one in the whole world. But as you may suspect, this large piece of land in contact with the Pacific’s waters must have some beaches. One of them, is Playa La Virgen in Atacama, near Bahía Inglesa as well as Copiapó, but some thousand kilometers away from Santiago.
I’m a lover of the Atacama Desert, but even for me it was a long travel. After many, many hours away from Rancagua and after crossing a complicated roadway (a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended, I wish I thought of that when I went there!), we can see the beach with turquoise waters and white sand, which reminds me of the Caribbean beaches.
After a fifteen-minute walk, we finally got to the beach. It’s a closed bay, with calm and transparent waters and beautiful surroundings. This place, like many others in the Atacama region, has not been affected by the man’s intervention. Only hippie-style lodge cabins (but very expensive!) and a little kiosk for food and handcraft can be found here.
It’s my fifth time to visit this place and a first during autumn. It’s still a lovable place, with less people, the water may be a little bit colder, but definitely so much warmer than O’higgins or Valparaíso coasts. The average annual temperature is 18ºC and almost no rain. Important: if you visit La Virgen, make sure to watch the sun goes down in the Pacific, it’s a must!
It is worth mentioning that the Playa La Virgen’s environment is conserving important archaeological sites of the Chango and Diaguita cultures (the first inhabitants of these territories) and places of paleontological fossils dating back millions of years.
I have to mention that for me, this and the other nearby beaches of the Atacama region are the best in Chile, the paradise in my country. And also my favourite spot to get some sun, all year round!
