No more crooked scans with the DigitaLIZA!

6

Click here to learn about the modification of the standard negative holder to fit the DigitaLIZA in my scanner. Thus, the DigitaLIZA can be aligned in the center for straight scans.

Anyone with a flatbed scanner and the DigitaLIZA knows this problem: The transparency unit is located somewhere in the middle of the scan area, so you can’t align the DigitaLIZA to an edge. The result is that the negatives, after changing to a new film strip, is never in the same place and you must always create a new scanning frame.

The standard negative holder, however, is fixed on my Canoscan 9000 with two small tabs in the scanner:

At some point in the chaos on the desk, I noticed that the 35mm DigitaLIZA is about the size of the inner frame of my medium format holder:

The negative holder is standard, according to the manufacturer it is in stores or on the Internet for 15-20 € ($20-30). I have therefore ordered an additional medium format holder. Since the bracket is made of relatively soft plastic, the inner part cut easily with a sturdy craft knife. Naturally, I had to unhook the folding framework for medium format strips beforehand.

After that I was able to lay on to the mounting DigitaLIZA and draw the cutting edge. With a craft knife, a small bow saw and a nail file, the negative holder was cut out appropriately within 15 minutes. Take care of your fingers when sawing! The modified holder looked then, compared to the untreated part, like this:

The cutout on the left, the original on the right.

Now when I use the DigitaLIZA, I put the modified frames in the scanner and leave it there. During negative changes, I need only take the DigitaLIZA from its new frame, insert a new film strip and put it back in the frame. The negative is always located in the same place in the scanner, centered under the transparency unit. This saves a lot of time and “eye-measurements”…

The next project is now a framework for the DigitaLIZA 120. It is naturally somewhat larger. The system is the same, but then something must be cut out larger.

I hope this helps you a bit when scanning!

Wow, great idea. Are you happy with this scanner? I'm looking for something to scan 120 and 35mm, and am considering the canoscan 9000f.

Yes, I´m quite happy with my Canoscan. For sure it´s not that fast and powerful like an ususal negative scanner, but it delivers a reasonable quality. You will get the best performance with Silverfast software and 4800dpi setting. According to a test chart scan this results in a real 2100dpi scan, which is quite enough data. The original Canon software is crappy, so look for a bundle...

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.

So here’s what we’ve been working on: an all new lomography.com

For the last year we've been working on the next version of Lomography. We based our work on the feedback you’ve given us over the years and we wanted to share it as early as possible with you and can’t wait to hear what you think. Just one warning first: it is still in development and things can break. All the photos, comments, likes, homes and everything else were transferred as of October 16th, 2014. So anything you do on next.lomography.com won't be reflected on www.lomography.com and vice versa. Once we are done with testing, everything you did here will be deleted again. So this is a big playground for you to explore.
