Krabi is a town on the west coast of southern Thailand. It is an increasingly popular tourist destination for beach lovers. There are several national parks in the area and popular activities include rock climbing, kayaking, sailing, bird watching and snorkeling.
My trip to Krabi was in the month of June. Lodging is much cheaper during this time of year as its falls in the monsoon period which is from May till October. We were expecting a few rainy days during our trip, however we didn’t realize that the rain would be the cause for a much more memorable trip.
On the first night, we had our first taste of the rain at Railay Bay. We were strolling back to our resort after dinner when it started to pour in an instant. It went from cool night breezes to raining cats and dogs. Needless to say, being the unprepared tourists that we were, we were totally drenched when we got back to our room.
The speedboat tours of the small islands in the area are also affected by the weather. What we learned when we were booking our tour was that if the weather was bad, the trip would be canceled. We were lucky though, on the day of our tour, we woke up to a bright and sunny morning and we managed to set off. The good weather however, didn’t last long and by the late afternoon it was pouring and the seas were choppy. Our tour of the islands ended up being quite an experience as we got stuck on one of the islands for a few hours while waiting for calmer weather. When we eventually did make our way back, we were in our small speedboat facing the still heavy rain and waves that were meters high. Believe me, that was really more weather than we were comfortable with.
That said, the weather’s good when it is good. You can spend the day relaxing by the beach, exploring the small shops and of course the food! The seafood there is really good and inexpensive.
