He knew this one was there, unseen, in the hazy heat of the day. It hovered over the parched lawn, waiting to destroy the expired and carelessly stored Polaroid 664. The packfilm was no match for time and low humidity.
They were all the same. They’d start in a corner, subtle, undetected, until it was too late. A flash of fury like a blinding light. Nothing could develop where the dragons had been. He had seen their destruction before. The misery they left in their wake was unbearable. Headless subjects, layers of colour completely obliterated. But this time, he was alone. no one would be there to stop the peel.
It would use the heat and the high summer sun to its advantage…he was exposed and had to think fast.
He looked around for a tool, a weapon, a way to dodge the impending burn. Instinct took over as he grabbed in the grass for the garden hose. There was no hesitation as he shot from the hip, firmly squeezing and holding his breath.
He couldn’t bear to look, but he somehow knew that he saved more than the image that day.
