First Lomo Meeting Nijmegen, NLD

2

March 13, 2011 was the day we finally organized a Lomo meeting in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. There where some start-up problems, but the day itself was a big success!

After some meetings in Amsterdam and Utrecht, I had the idea to organize a Lomo meeting in Nijmegen. I made a blog on lomography.com. There were some responses but not a lot. After that I posted it on the Facebook page of lomographyNLD, and again some responses but still… I was not satisfied. I knew my niece and her boyfriend would join, and @tsjort wanted to come as well. But that was it. lomographyNLD convinced me to continue and I wrote an event on lomography.com. Finally there were a couple of more people who where interested to join. But ’til Sunday it was not sure if they where able to come.

That Sunday came and I was a bit worried when I went to the meeting point. Luckily there was no need to! I saw a girl standing alone and asked her: Lomo? Yes, the first one really came! Then another girl said ‘Hello’, followed by a third. So there we were, with @luasan (a Brazilian girl from Germany), @achocolatemoose (Dutch girl) and @angelf (from the Philippines). A couple of minutes later, @elefteria (half Greek) and @ismikk (Dutch) arrived. And we met @tsjort (Russian) on our way to the centre of Nijmegen. As you can read, there were many nationalities which made it extra fun! And of course lomographyNLD sent me a package with posters and some film. Now we had a project which we took with both hands (Dutch expression).

We walked around the old centre of Nijmegen, and went to the riverside, talked about the history and of course shoot lots of photos. It was a bit cloudy and cold and a couple of films failed (due to overexposure, failing of the camera or ruined by the lab) but still, it was a great meeting, which we will probably do again some time!

My list of resolutions for 2015 consists of 12 projects, one for every month. March was for caffenol. You have probably heard of the amazing fact that you can develop black and white photos with coffee, sodium, and vitamin C. I had tried this before but with less than stellar results. Somehow, there's always something going wrong. Time to devote a few rolls to caffenol to finally get the hang of it.

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.

It was my first return visit in about 20 years. I took the chance and packed as many cameras as possible into my luggage. In part two of my journey log, I'm going to show you the pictures I took with my Lomography cameras.
