Poor Man's Leica , FED 5B

23

Wanna feel how rich people owned and snap using a Leica? If you don't have much money and feel the same way like I do, what if you owned a FED 5B. It's very cheap camera as you can get a very affordable price at the flea market but the ability is really awesome!

Rangefinder is really awesome camera I ever had. The fully manual mode really taught me how the professional photographer worked. It make me learn the hard way. You need to ready your focus, then snap. You won’t get the same feel when you shoot with Point and Shoot camera. Personally, when using rangefinder camera, I don’t like to put apply “lomo” effect in it but I look at it a perfectionist way. I get more serious when using Rangefinder camera.

FED 5B is a soviet camera which is the clone of the legendary mighty Leica. The shutter speed range is from B mode to 500 . When I buy it, it came with a 55 Industar 61 l/d lens which is a fixed lens with a smallest aperture , 2.8. The camera is really heavy because it is made up of stainless steel. Moreover, it works fully mechanically. That attract me a lot because of the clicking and shutter cloth sound during you push the shutter button. Here are some result from the camera :-

When I bought FED 5B , I don’t have idea what is shutter speed, aperture, depth of field and any other terminology. I suggest you, this rangefinder is the best way you learn this terminology practically if you can’t afford to buy an expensive SLR or any kind of camera which has the same kind of features.

Besides, I’m sure you’ll feel awkward if you are a first timer. In fact, when you use rangefinder the excitement is beyond imagination. I think that’s what people always talk about " The Smell of Russian Camera " . I want to share with all of you on how I treat my lovely old communist camera. I put it in a box with a lot of silica gel along with other cameras to prevent fungus stick on the lens.
Please take note, when you use FED 5B YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE SHUTTER SPEED BEFORE YOU COCK YOUR SHUTTER. Means , COCK THE SHUTTER FIRST THEN PULL OUT THE SHUTTER SPEED AND TURN IT CLOCKWISE OR ANTI-CLOCKWISE. For correct exposure, you can try a cheap light meter. I used LENINGRAD 4 ,Exposure Meter which I buy from a friend of mine in russia !

Last but not least, if you have a free time, just visit my lomohome. do drop your comment there !

my FED5 is probably the most "enjoyable" camera to shoot with that I own... full recommendation for the FED5 and FED5B (the standard fed5 has a light meter to help!!).... get one off ebay with a nice leather case for it and youll be in love too.

"When I buy it, it came with a 55 Industar 61 l/d lens which is a fixed lens with a smallest aperture , 2.8" my bad. I mean the smallest value is 2.8 where it is the biggest aperture the lens can open. The smallest is 16.

I agree with you that the FED5b is an increadible camera. I have read somewhere that it was
given to soviet soldiers. I found mine for around 40 dollars (coming from Ukrainia) and it was in perfect state except a small defect in the curtain that I have easely repaired by myself! You have written a fair article. Jean
