Influential Photographs: Man on the Moon, 1969 by Neil Armstrong

This photograph is literally out of this world. We, worldlings, will surely remember it – to infinity and beyond!

Man had a mission and a vision to walk on the Earth’s moon. This became a reality in 1969 when Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins landed on the lunar surface via the spaceflight named Apollo 11.

Neil Armstrong had the camera, a 70 mm Hasselblad, most of the time and this explains why most of the historic pictures taken during the mission show Buzz Aldrin. In this particular photo, which became one of the most famous photographs of the 20th Century, Neil not only captured his fellow astronaut’s defining moment in space, he also immortalized the proof that he was present in that historical achievement as well.

If we would take a closer look on the reflection of Buzz’s reflection and then if we would de-sphere, it we would find a more identifiable, mirror image of the photographer who was none other than Neil himself.

Continuous discoveries and missions in the outer space are being launched and made my man. This significant photograph is permanently etched in our minds and it will always inspire and remind us about man’s capacity and intellect to explore the outside world.

In related to this, we, earthlings, recently witnessed ‘a Supermoon’ when our moon closely approached our planet. Were you able to capture the full moon in film? Post the link to the image in the comments.

Our intention with the Influential Photographs columns is not to glorify or demean the subject of the photo. Our intention with this column is to highlight the most influential analogue photographs of history. The photographs we feature are considered icons, for their composition, subject matter, or avant-garde artistic value.

Neil Krug: Daylight Nightmares and Color Codes

His work has the anachronistic charm of hand-tinted photographs and the trippy flavor of rock. Sometimes too his portraits of Lana Del Rey, Kevin Parker and Jim James cross over to the territory of graphic design and pop art, skewing definitions of what a picture is. Neither are his views on photography straitlaced, as this exciting interview with Lomography proves.

The Beauty of Black and White

A popular quote by photojournalist Ted Grant goes, "When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!" Indeed, the lack of vibrant color forces the viewer to see beyond what is on plain view and recognize the atmosphere surrounding a photograph. In this post, we've handpicked black and white shots taken in various situations and exhibit different moods.

Lomography Singapore plays host to Parallel Planets’ first exhibition, "Façades: Neo-Noir Portraits Exhibition," featuring all-analog photography: a sea of black and white film portraits. This exhibition serves as a platform where both local and international photographers can express themselves by injecting individual perspectives into their craft. It also encourages viewers to look through the lens of the photographers, to see the subjects as who they are – flawed, alive, and breathing – and to also see beyond the façades we all choose to don.

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.
