A Way Back to Weymouth

6

I thought I'd tell you about one of my favourite places in the world. Known to only few, this quiet beach town is a laid back haven stuck in the past. Weymouth is not a landmark as such but a place to go when you want to escape from the busy life we so easily find ourselves living.

For as long as I can remember, our family has owned a 50s era asbestos shack (yes we call them shacks here) in a corner of Weymouth called “Frog’s Hollow”. Overtime we slowly made it liveable and now lend the place to anyone we know that needs a getaway.

Weymouth lies at the mouth of the Pipers River in northern Tasmania. It both has a beach facing the sea and another on the tidal river’s edge. Our shack is nestled behind the sand dunes between the sea and the river.

Weymouth is not really a tourist spot as there are no famous landmarks and such, but it is a really beautiful spot with a great beach and river. It simply has the feel of a classic quiet beach town and for me, has extra meaning.

My closest group of friends, about eight in total, come here for trips during all seasons. After we finished school many of us have gone our separate ways interstate and haven’t been able to see each other nearly as much. Weymouth has become our excuse to get back together, so for me this place symbolises friendship, love, and reunion. Our grand plan is to keep getting together in Weymouth even as we grow older. We have promised that when we have children of our own, we will force them be friends and take them to Weymouth to continue the story.

If you come by with no expectations as I did as a kid, I think you would be pleasantly surprised!

@basho - don't worry, one of the first things we did was paint up all the asbestos that was on the outside to seal in the nasties! It's pretty safe if it's contained and not disturbed. Thanks for reading :)
