Cité Durmar is a very nice, small, hidden dead-end in Paris. Accessible from the Rue Oberkampf through a door generally left open on week days.
A wonderful way to imagine how Paris looked like a century ago. When entering this little street, formerly built as truck farms, you immediately fall back in the old Paris: paved stones, walls, windows and ornaments that seem unchanged for decades. There’s even vintage furniture left here by the occupants, a vintage Citroen DS car, old tables, and chairs, and so many old tools and objects here and there.
This is really the perfect place to go if you want to do a shoot with an old-fashioned Parisian setting. Even just the walls make you feel like you’re in the nineteenth century.
In 2004 the Cité was sold to a real-estate company which wants to ‘rehabilitate’ the area. In other words, clean the mess up, throw all artists and other poor people out and re-sell at prices only extremely rich people will be able to afford. In other words, erase all signs of what makes this place magical! Since then, current occupants are struggling against these promoters to keep the place as is.
I’d recommend you quickly go there if you want to take a piece of that magic and make it last forever!
