Fred Herzog: Kodachrome photographs from the '50s

8

I recently attended the Peter Lindbergh exhibition "On Street" at C/O Berlin. It was dedicated to Lindbergh's classic and timeless fashion photos.

Main picture of the exhibition

When I arrived at C/O and saw the queue up on the street, I really doubted whether I should go back home. It was raining and cold and I had no desire to queue up for an hour. I pulled it together however, because it was the last week of the exhibition and I wanted to see it. In retrospect, I’m pretty happy about it because I got to know Fred Herzog. I had never heard of him, but when I saw the main screen of the exhibition “Fred Herzog – Photographs” it had happened to me. These colors! Those pictures! Great!

Fred Herzog is a native German who emigrated to Canada in the 50s. There he followed his passion for photography and started his career. He portrayed by preference unspectacular scenes of everyday life in Vancouver. He was one of the first photographers to work with color film, which made him a pioneer of American color photography. Color photos back then were not particularly valuable. But he wanted to show life as it was – in color. He preferred mainly Kodachrome film.

Here is a small best-of gallery with pictures that particularly impressed me. Enjoy the beauty of Kodachrome images and dive into the world of the 50s.

Kodachrome has such a unique pop, these photos really demonstrate why there was so much hype surrounding its retirement... :-( Great article!

In more ways than one, Lomography is an art form as much as it is an effective tool to communicate. This is proven in the politically-driven exhibition “Selfies from Oranienplatz," of which the opening event will be taking place on the 16th of October as part of the European Month of Photography in Berlin. In April of this year I had the chance to test the Petzval Lens and to write a review on it for the German photography forum Kwerfeldein. The lens excited me from the very beginning, at the time it was introduced on Kickstarter. I was afraid that once I had tested the lens, I would want to have one of my own! Well, that’s what happened; a year later, I finally bought my very own Petzval lens.
