All Photos on a Zoomable Map

16

Back when we launched a new visualization of all photos on a map, a lot of people asked to make this map zoomable – this is what we tried to do and here is the result.

You can find the experiment in our playground (not anymore, please read the update below). Please note: this is an early demostration and might be a bit slow – we just wanted to have it online to see its performance and get some intitial feedback from you, our dear community. Thanks!

Update: Due to some performance issues we’ve put the experiment down again. We will resolve these issues and put it online again, we just don’t want this to affect the performance of the site. Thanks for your nice feedback so far – happy to see you like it!

@all: sorry we had to deactivate this feature – testing it with all of you showed us the speed bottlenecks. We are working on those and bring it back again, no worries!

    When in London

What makes travel a great experience is the newness of things. The environment, people and culture tend to be different from customs back home. Coming from the Philippines, I found a lot of novel things in the United Kingdom, especially in the city of London.

    Trusty Bags for Trusty Cameras

We spend copious amounts of time stalking camera forums and researching specifications that "hunter" seems a more fitting term than "collector." And yet, when the time comes to pack all this game—the new or thrillingly ancient cameras—we DIY padding on the spot. (Guilty of trying to avoid the unappealing gear bag from the department store.) Last year though we stocked up on camera bags that are as cool as they are protective. Here are some of them.

A Salute to the Masters: Judo (A Tribute to Sabine Weiss)

This article is a tribute to the street and humanist photographer Sabine Weiss. Considered a living legend in street photography, she likes to photograph daily lives of people, trying to capture the emotions she recognizes around her. Weiss like to photograph people of all ages but she especially loves to take photos of children, masterfully immortalizing their spontaneous gestures and emotions. For this article, I was inspired by one of her rare sports photos of some children practicing judo. Do you want to know more about this great artist? Well, read on!

Doug DuBois on My Last Day at Seventeen

Doug DuBois spent five summers photographing the small neighborhood of Russell Heights in Ireland to capture the essence of coming of age: the inevitable loss of youth and the imminent transition into adulthood. Those four years resulted in his latest book, My Last Day At Seventeen. The book is a visual tale told through a collection of photographs and gives an alternative perspective through a comic narrative around the same subject. This creative combination of two distinct narratives in one book not only works wonderfully in visual terms; it also serves as an essential tool that lets the reader dig deeper into the story being told, making one go back to the book over and over again, yet from a new perspective, every single time.

Self to the World: The Photography of Leanne Surfleet

A self-portrait may take root in confidence, extreme shyness or alternate bouts of each. Leanne Surfleet goes through this kind of fluctuation when the camera is all eyes. The attraction—as far as we’re concerned—is the mix of uncertainty and a kind of quiet poise. And here and there, a flash of skin that is more a mystery than full-on revelation. Even Surfleet’s portraits of other people have the same hushed invite, as if to say questions are encouraged. There we took our cue.
