Lisbon: 48-Hour Limit

Thinking of what do this weekend? Well what about a weekend trip to Lisbon? We made our way to this picturesque city with our new Diana F+ in tow. In spite of our limited time, we were able to make the most of it by having a taste of some of the best things that Lisbon has to offer.

To begin, do try to go to Lisbon by plane as it is the best way to go based on our experience. We arrived on a Saturday at dawn and left on Sunday at dusk – exactly 48 incredible hours filled with new experiences of the city.

We will divide our Lisbon experience in 5 areas – per neighborhood:

Marqués de Pombal / Avda. de la Libertad: is an ideal location to look for a place to sleep; we chose the Florida Hotel (a film hotel, literally!). Nearby is a huge square from where you can take Avda de la Libertad, which will then take you to Tajo River where you will begin to see those typical buildings covered with tiles.

Barrio Alto / Chiado: going up the “Elevador de Santa Justa” (a metallic elevator designed by a disciple of the Eiffel) you’ll arrive to this old and majestic neighborhood famous for its cafes like “A Brasileira” where you can have coffee with Fernando Pessoa, a famous local writer. Don’t leave without having a walk through its streets which is full of antique and picturesque shops. Without any doubt, take the famous old 28 tram that will take you back in time.

Baixa: With 4 squares, highlighting the “Praça do Comércio”, you can enjoy a view over the Tajo River and find some surprises such as San Francisco’s “Golden Gate” or Rio Di Janeiro’s “Cristo del Corcovado” (But weren’t we at Lisbon?!?!)

Oh! If you’re lucky you’ll find “The Beatles” in the middle of “Rua Augusta”.

Or maybe it was just an illusion?!

Alfama / Castello: We took Tram 28 at Chiado neighborhood, which then took us up to Alfama where we visited the Cathedral, Castello de San Jorge and enjoyed some time to rest with a great view of the Tajo River from the Santa Luzia balcony. Views like these will definitely prompt you to put another film in your camera.

If you’re looking for a place to have lunch or dinner – or somewhere which has the best Mojitos in Portugal along with a great view of the Tajo River, do visit “Chapito Place”: Don’t miss it!

Belem: Taking a bus in Baixa you’ll arrive to this neighborhood located at the south of the Tajo River’s mouth. Here you can visit: “Torre de Belem” (a defense tower built to control the river), “Monumento a los Descubridores” (it commemorates the 500 years of Henry the Navigator’s death) and the “Monasterio de los Jerónimos” (and best of all, its famous cloister).

Last but not the least, do buy some “Pasteis de Belem”: directly from the cake maker’s place, which is covered with tiles and has a great and tasty smell.

Bom Viagem!

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.
