My lubitel Story : I <3 Lubitel

6

I wanted one for the sake of novelty. I admit it. It seemed so cool to have a TLR Camera. My friend had one but he wouldn’t lend it to me because it wasn’t working properly. So when I got my LC-A I decided to add the Lubitel 2 to save on the shipping costs (Oh the lies we tell ourselves).

I remember going to the Postal Office on a Friday. I had to sneak out from work and feign that I had a personal emergency which in principle was pretty descriptive of what I was feeling. I was battling excitement and panic at the same time. This was the first shipment I ordered from another country. I wasn’t so sure about this global commerce era. But I knew I had to take a chance since the seller seemed to have had street-cred and his prices weren’t so bad either. When I arrived at the claiming area I handed my postal notice. It was half crumpled from the anxiety I felt while I was waiting in line.

But I couldn’t show them how excited I was just in case they’d have the mind to charge me with ridiculous taxes and fees. So when they opened it up they asked what was the item. I told them they were old non-functioning cameras. They checked the declaration of value. They didn’t quite believe that it was that cheap. It was obvious they were gonna try to pull one over me. I explained the cameras were spare for spare parts and at the end they decided on a one sided compromise. Which is to say I was only slightly screwed over.

When I opened the box up back in the office it was cradled in glorious bubble wrap. It was still in its tan colored leather case. I would get a whiff of the camera’s industrial scent. So this is what old Russia smelled like I thought to myself. I brought the cameras with me to ask some friends how to work it. Even after that, I still didn’t know half of what I was doing. Five months later, it’s still the only medium format camera I have. I’ve pimped it up a bit by attaching a PC flash thingie so I could use it better at night. I also bought it it’s own flexible tripod. Now I carry it around either like a cave man’s club with my hands on the tripod or sometimes I cradle it like a baby alien, tripod legs folded up but still sticking out. I was right. It was cool to have a TLR camera not for how you look when you’re rocking it but for what the camera gives you when the roll comes back form your favorite developer.

Lomography Redscale XR 50-200 120: Perfect for Endless Multiple Exposures!

About two years ago or so, I purchased the Lomography Redscale XR 50-200. I saved just one roll of this film and waited for the right moment to shoot with it. In April this year, I just wasn't able to take it anymore! I loaded this film into my Lubitel 166+, which I realized I hadn't used for maybe about six months. One idea came to mind: taking crazy multiple exposures!

    Fresh from the Lab: 1990

A weekend without a lomowalk seems bad, at least for me. One Saturday morning, I decided to join my friends in their lomowalk. It was all cloudy at first but it didn't stop me from going out and walking. I brought my new Nikon FM2 and some expired rolls, just to test my camera. Was it just me being sleepy, or was my Nikon FM2 acting up? My photos turned out grainy, pale, and, in my opinion, looking so 1990s?

The LomoChrome Purple and How Its Colors Convinced Me in the End

I wasn't very impressed when the LomoChrome Purple was first released. At least not so much that I wanted to get my hands on it at once. Of course I liked some pictures but eventually, I wanted to test it and what can I say? It was love at first sight!

Solo Biking Routes: Ubud in Bali, Indonesia

Have you all watched "Eat, Pray, Love"? I was inspired by Julia Roberts, who rode a bicycle in that movie, so I decided to rent one and try it myself! This happened two years ago but I still remember my biking route. To all of you who haven't been to Ubud, I think you should visit the place and try to go around in a bicycle!

Fresh from the Lab: Silvia Precisa

Recently, I used my trusty Fuji Silvi. It may not be my all-time favorite camera, but I just wanted to use it because I kind of missed shooting with it. So I decided to look through my film stash to see what I could use with the Fuji Silvi. After much consideration, I ended up picking the old Agfa CT Precisa ISO 100 to get that classic blue tone. Silvia Precisa!

My Day in Analogue: Weekends in Bandung

Hello, fellow lomographers! To be honest, ever since I started working last year, I haven't been able to write a single analogue lifestyle piece. But today I decided to write something about my days, especially about my weekend in Bandung. It's not much but I take it as the start of a new beginning in writing all over again here. So, here's my weekend in Bandung!

My Analogue Bucket List: Faster Than a Speeding Cannonball

The new year is still young, but it seems as if it'll be over quickly. My organizer is already filled with entries until June. 2015 will probably be worse than 2014 when it comes to having time off so I could take some analogue shots. Anyway, there are some photography-related things that I really want to get done. It is probably best to set some goals if I only have very limited time.

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.
