A Film Which Expired 32 Years Ago

Even though this film expired a long, long time ago, it still shows some interesting results. They look like 40 years old!

Some time ago, I asked all my friends for some old films. The girlfriend of my flat mate brought me from her parents two old films, one slide film (which must be developed in the old Agfa process and therefore cannot be used any more), and one Orwo NP27 rollfilm from the DDR.

The two films spend some time in my film box, before I found them again and took the one of them with me to holidays, where I passed Timmendorfer beach on the north coast of Germany. I did not know much about the film, I even thought at that moment that it would be a color negative film. The only thing I knew, was, that it was expired in August 1978 and that it had an ISO 400. To be honest, I thought from the beginning that the pictures wouldn’t turn out, and just took some shoots without big thoughts of some creative motives.

Back in Düsseldorf, I went to my local laboratory and asked them for developing my film. They looked at it very critical and said that it must be a black and white film. I trusted them and waited for the results.

After getting the negatives back, I was really satisfied with the results! The pictures are looking very old and blurry and have many dots on them, but the motives are really good visible, even though the films hadn’t been in a freezer all the years. Also the ISO seems to be still the same. Happy about those pictures I ordered myself some more Orwo films in the internet, but the oldest expiration date I got is 1992. Such a treasure like I had with this film isn’t easy to find ;)

Orwo is an old company which was founded by Agfa. It had the monopoly for films in the old DDR. In 1990, the company was changed to Wolfen, but got in insolvency some years after. Today, there are no films done under the name Orwo.

I have a roll of Ilford from 1958 in my lubitel at the moment. I can not wait to get it developed, but do not want to use it all up. On top of that, it might not even get any results!

Thanks for sharing your results, I have (slightly) higher hopes for mine.

So incredibly cool, shoujoai. I'm debating over whether to buy a roll of film I say for sale that expired in the FORTIES. Can you imagine that? Shooting a roll that's over 60 years old! Ugh. And seeing this tempts me to buy it even more.

Even something as decorous as a fashion snapshot has a historical function. It recalls norms imposed on women. Even more interesting is how they followed or twisted these expectations: Did ladies flash skin as an expression of freedom? Did they enjoy fashion? This gallery shows that some of them certainly did.

Some time ago, my parents-in-law gave me an old Polaroid camera that they used during my wife's childhood. After some investigation, I found out that Polaroid had stopped making instant film. But the factory in Enschedé, the Netherlands had been taken over by The Impossible Project, so I bought a package of fresh film and gave it a try!

Black and White Photography: The Forms of the World

Colors may be amped to look unreal, like nothing of this world. Shots may be doubled, cross-processed, post-processed, mixed up into collages. The possibilities are infinite, yet some photographers still prefer black and white. Even in 2016, it is an ode to classic values of precision and balance. Light and shadow must be one pleasing dance. And just like in a well-choreographed piece, forms are obvious or playing coy. It all depends on how you're looking.

In this interview, Izzo talks about her beginnings which, of course, included going to as many shows and festivals as she possibly can; some of her most memorable on-the-job-experiences with the likes of The Doors, Lykke Li, Jack White, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Chris Robinson Brotherhood; her inspirations and other interests; and her love for film photography and Diana Mini. And to those looking into fulfilling their own dreams of working in the same industry, Izzo also shares helpful advice based on her own experiences.

    Trusty Bags for Trusty Cameras

We spend copious amounts of time stalking camera forums and researching specifications that "hunter" seems a more fitting term than "collector." And yet, when the time comes to pack all this game—the new or thrillingly ancient cameras—we DIY padding on the spot. (Guilty of trying to avoid the unappealing gear bag from the department store.) Last year though we stocked up on camera bags that are as cool as they are protective. Here are some of them.
