The Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim enjoys legendary status among Lomographic cameras. Find out why!
I had long been seeking out this jewel. I wanted my precioussss… I mean I wanted one in new condition, but they are not easy to find, as they are not being produced any more! Sure, there are some clones, but I guess nothing is better than the real thing (+ variants being exempted :p)!
Thus, I was exhilarated to see some for sale right here in the Lomography Online Shop and immediately bought one, despite the steep P&P fee [ouch ;(] and you will see why!
The VUWS is a very light, very small and flat camera that all you have to do with is press a button and wind the film. It is so easy to take pictures with it, it makes it an ideal beginner camera. But also pros are loving it because of its many advantages, like the Ultra Wide lens it has! You don’t really even need to point with this camera. This makes it ideal for my favourite lomographic laws: Don’t Think Just Shoot! and Shoot From The Hip!
What makes this possible is its superb fixed focus f/11 and 22 mm lomographic lens and the adequate fixed shutter speed of 1/125s. However, as you already have guessed, you should use 400 ISO film and upwards with this flashless baby, although on really sunny days I have gotten fabulous results with ISO 200 film!
The fact it is so small and portable makes it a joy to shoot with it! My films are always finished before I know it when I’m out and about with this baby!
This, however, has also to do with the fact that I use only 12 and 24 frame films with it. I read somewhere that the winding mechanism is rather fragile and therefore you shouldn’t put too much traction on it. Also, you should not leave the shutter cocked but always wind immediately before you shoot, as otherwise the mechanism will wear down. This makes for some frantic winding so as not to miss the decisive moment, but it something you will get quickly accustomed to :D
Also, never grab it like you would another cam as your fingers will appear in the photo, courtesy of the ultra-wide lens! Grab it by the sides only!
To conclude, this is an awesome camera to shoot with and, in fact, I should be out now shooting some frames. So grab one while there still are some left in the shop and see ya l8er!
