Olympus XA2, The Camera Lecter.

5

Small and black, with a red button as a trigger and a great Zuiko lens. Its similarities with the LC-A is amazing. But I will start again.

I got this camera for the price of 20 euros via the Internet. I bought this from a man from Granada, who told me that the camera had been in the attic a long time just gathering dust. But it had enjoyed a full life as the back of it was peeling. The camera worked well and it has good looks.

Days later I received the device at my house. It came in a box, which looked suspicious because it was patched with brown leather.

It’s physical characteristics are easily identifiable as an honorary member of the family XA: Compact, metal body painted black, sliding house lens cover, direct display, and the shutter button is red.

As for the technical characteristics, features Zuiko lenses f = 35mm 1:3.5. On the other hand it is an automatic exposure camera, like the LC-A; The ASA setting lets you select between 25 and 800, giving you the opportunity to make long exposures choosing 25-50. The zone approach is, again, similar to the LC-A and gives you the option to focus from 0.90meters, 3 or infinity. This model has a timer at the bottom of the case. Also, there is a tab that indicates the amount of battery life.

The indicator is a red light at the right front of the camera and it makes a beep. To shoot with the timing, you push the tab, load the shot and press the shutter. You have about 25 seconds to place yourself and smile. The camera then starts to been right before it takes the picture.

But let’s talk about the pictures:
High contrast, minimal vignetting, soft colors and great possibilities.
The response of the lens against the light is great, getting great results with natural light.

The operation of the auto exposure system is extremely accurate. Its ability to record the details clearly is just amazing.

Finally a couple of historical references. The XA series began back in 79 with the appearance of the Olympus XA, a simple camera, designed for large groups, but spared no expense in quality. Referring to the XA2 model, it is basically a simplified XA with some new and some disadvantages (its response to certain colors is not as bright as its sister models.) Still, it was born the second of his class in 1980. Another point would be the possibility of embedding a unique flash like the A11, so I have not used the technique with the colorsplash style.

The Olympus XA2 can also be referred to the camera that was handled by the detective in “Manhunter”, played by William Petersen TV (Grissom from CSI Las Vegas). First arose from a bag a tape (yes, friends, before we had to record with cassette tape recorders) and then an XA2!. The brave but badly played detective looks nothing less than the psychopath Hannibal Lecter in the worst movie of the saga.

Cheers.

Wow, I quite enjoyed Manhunter! I'll have to watch it again for the XA2!

I shoot with an XA and XA3, I've got an XA2 but I lent it to my friend to test out.

When I was a child, I regularly went to Blaavand located at the Danish west coast with my brothers and my parents. However, I didn't anymore when I grew up. But in 2012, we hit the road again. It was my first visit there in about 20 years. I took the chance and packed as many cameras as possible into my luggage. Nothing Happens on Color Film: Street Life in Como As Seen From the Bus

Some weeks ago, I made a tribute to the great photographer Robert Frank and his 1958 black and white series taken in New York from a bus window. He is the master of the ordinary moments, capturing the essence of daily life in a series of free and random sequence of photos where nothing important happens! And as I've written there I wanted to take a similar experiment with color film, which would change the perception of the environment where people live. Read more after the jump!
