I Love my DigitaLIZA Scanning Mask!

12

The little side-kick that all lomo lovers should consider adding to their collection!

I pride myself on the fact that I’m pretty thrifty in finding alternative ways to making things work. However, when it comes to scanning my photos, one little buddy I just could not live without is my 35mm DigitaLIZA scanning mask!

When I first figured out how to properly feed my Holga some 35mm film, I was so excited to see some awesome sprocket action. To my disappointment, I realized that the scanning mask I had wasn’t wide enough and even the most specialized photo lab in my city looked at me like I was an alien when I asked if they could scan my negatives – sprockets and all. I read a bunch of forums online and decided I would try making my own home-made mask, which turned out as nothing more than a pathetic mess of black cardboard and rubber bands.

About 10 days later, a sleek, sexy DigitaLIZA arrived in the mail, which made scanning my negatives, a sinch! This little guy is strong enough to hold everything in place, but is delicate enough to not damage your film. A long, magnetic ruler-type device gently holds the film flat while you close the top of the mask to lock it all in place. It’s even strong enough to hold the film in place while I dust off the negative with a little pressurized air before hitting up the scanner. At only about 30$, and measuring about 23 cm, this affordable mask is perfect if you want to show off some cool sprockets, and is ideal if you have any sweet panoramas or even overlapping photos to show off.

All I know is that I love my DigitaLIZA! And I know you will too!!!

I would love some step by step instructions to use this with my Epson V600 scanner ~ my sprocket holes are not showing up and it wants to split each photo.

Lovely! I have this but I don't know if it works with my current scanner. I tried once but it turned out all messed up :(
If anyone can help, do hit me up at my home, thanks guys!

@awesome & lindys, i have no idea about your scanners scanners but it just sounds to me like the software is making the decisions about what to do with the scans automatically. If you havent already you should play around with the software settings. try and disable any auto cropping etc, there should be some kind of setting for that stuff.

@awesomesther // @lindys -- its hard to give step by step instructions because it depends on your scanner and also the software you're using. But see if you can switch the settings to manual...When I started using my scanner, the default settings automatically cropped my image and didn't let me include the sprockets... but see if you can switch it to manual mode??

I didn't understand what does digitalisa do... is it to "upload" or "pass" pictures to the computer or to cut the photo in size you want ?

@faithhopeluv - Basically the main purpose of a scanning mask in general, is to hold your film in a straight, flat line so that you can place it in the scanner. But a normal scanning mask will hold the film in place by covering up the sprockets... So the digitaiza is perfect because it still holds the film down straight and tightly but by not covering up the sprocket holes. Which is awesome if you're trying to scan your entire negative - top to bottom, sprockets in all.

really? i'm so disappointed i spent that money on that... doesn't work with the V600 unless you cut the film to fit the mask, so goodbye scanning holgaramas... would be cool to have an actual list rather than saying "all modern flat..." as the V600 is supposedly modern and is backlit too!
Or do you people at Lomo have tried and know a trick?

@karmaprovesincere With my V600, if I line it up against the front border of the scanner (where the "Quick Scan" buttons are), it will scan.

Tipster: Three Easy Distressed Masks for the Lomo'Instant

I like to make and use masks with my Lomo'Instant camera, but sometimes they are too dominant. In coming up with more subtle masks, I found several that produced an interesting, distressed look, especially when paired with the camera flash and color gel strips. They're especially good for creating Halloween-themed photos.

A Salute to the Masters: Judo (A Tribute to Sabine Weiss)

This article is a tribute to the street and humanist photographer Sabine Weiss. Considered a living legend in street photography, she likes to photograph daily lives of people, trying to capture the emotions she recognizes around her. Weiss like to photograph people of all ages but she especially loves to take photos of children, masterfully immortalizing their spontaneous gestures and emotions. For this article, I was inspired by one of her rare sports photos of some children practicing judo. Do you want to know more about this great artist? Well, read on!

    Bite-Size Fiction: The Memory Pill

Someday, getting rid of unwanted memories will be as easy as popping a pill and waiting a few hours for the desired effect to kick in. Literally a bitter pill to swallow (you'd think that with all the advancements in science then, they would've already made, say, fruit-flavored ones like the vitamins you loved as a kid), sure, but effective nonetheless.

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.
