The Istana

2

The Istana (which means ‘Palace’ in Malay) is the official residence of the President of the Republic of Singapore. Built by the British colonial government in 1869 to house its governors, the Government house was renamed The Istana in 1959 when Singapore achieved self government.

Located on top of a hill over 100 acres of prime land along the bustling orchard Road, It is opened to the public on a few major public holidays. The parkland within which the Istana is sited is lush with magnificent tress and colourful shrubs. A 9-hole golf course, theme gardens and several smaller bungalows are co-located within the domain.

On 7 August 2010 ( just 2 days away from our National Day), a perfect sunny day as it was the Open House Day for The Istana. I took my trusty lomography Diana F+ and decided to document this wonderful and magnificent location!

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.

Bolt from the Blue: Cyanotype Workshop

One of the earliest photographic printing processes, cyanotype printing produces cyan-colored prints using a mixture of ammonium iron(III) citrate and potassium ferricyanide. It was discovered in 1842 by English scientist and astronomer John Herschel who mainly used it for reproducing notes and diagrams. The process was later adapted by Anna Atkins in producing her photographic book about algaes called Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions.

    Changing Seasons: Durham in Autumn

Durham is a beautiful but tiny university city in the north of England famous for its amazing cathedral, which is one of Britain's best loved buildings. When I was studying at the university, I loved to go for crisp, autumnal walks around the cathedral and the river, kicking the leaves and basking in the golden glow of the season. The Lomography Redscale film perfectly captures the beauty of this time of year.
