Winter Wonderland in Hokkaido


Hokkaido is Japan largest prefecture and is just a 1.5hr flight from Haneda airport. Consist of Japan entire northern island; Hokkaido is one of the most beautiful places to spend your winter holidays. For those who think that winter is cold and bitter, a visit to Hokkaido will change that perception. There are so many places to visit, so many things to eat and so many activities for everyone.

During the winter season, the whole island is covered in soft powdery snow. You can see snowman of different sizes popping out on the streets and kids playing in the snow. Start your trip by visiting Odori Park along the main street of Sapporo. This is the location for the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. Join the locals and take pictures with the magnificent ice sculptures. Still at Odari, go up Sapporo TV Tower to catch a 360 view of the city.

Animals’ lovers, stop by the fox farm and get up close to fantastic Mr Fox. Also, visit the crane centre to watch the exotic red-crowned cranes dancing elegantly in the snow. Another popular activity is to hop on the ice breaker cruise to ride through the drift ice off the sea of Okhotsk. The best time for this excursion is usually in mid February.

For the active, spend a day or two at Niseko ski resorts. Hone your snowboarding skill by manoeuvring through the different courses. After a good workout in the cold, have a bowl of hot ramen. Wide variety of ramen can be found at Ramen Alley just a short 5min walk from Susukino Subway Station. For seafood lovers, don’t forget to visit Nijo seafood market to taste the freshest sashimi and giant crabs. You can also find juicy melons, strawberries and the list goes on and on. Simply “Oishii”….

    nice galleries and great article! Hokkaido is also amazing in the summer... i have been there in the summer of 2009 and can't wait for the next visit... maybe next time I'll try the winter :)
