Chinatown Kristintachibana

A small Chinatown in comparison to the other big cities in the nation, our little Chinatown in Honolulu is packed with shops, eateries, bars and other businesses (even the late night prostitute and/or ice addict...I'm sure those in Chinatown and the city of Honolulu will love the picture I just painted - but it is the truth)...I prefer to walk around during the day to capture the essence of the culture there.

Scattered around this area are many shops stocked with cheap, useless products that scream to be bought. Bright, plastic items which you have no idea what to do with, let alone what they are. Foreign smells drift into the streets from the many restaurants and eateries. If you are brave enough to venture outside of your normal fare and taste some of the yummy ethnic dishes, this is the place to do it. Beware, though, what you eat may very well be the intestine of a pig or cow…something my Caucasian boyfriend (such a good sport) found out the rather hard way. The people there are not unfriendly, but cautious of the Chinatown visitors…but then again, show them the money and best friends you are…I love to take photos here because of the many colors and oddities you will encounter. The buildings in and around Chinatown reflect the architecture of old Hawaii…with a touch of Chinese culture. Since I am drawn to noise and bright colors, this is definitely a place for me! You will never be bored or disappointed in Chinatown!!! :)

It isn’t hard to find. It is right off Nimitz Highway, across from the Aloha Tower area. Just start heading toward the mountain from Aloha Tower area and you will hit Chinatown.

Summer Hot Spots: Blaavand, Denmark (Part One)

When I was a child, I regularly went to Blaavand located at the Danish west coast with my brothers and my parents. However, I didn't anymore when I grew up. But in 2012, we hit the road again. It was my first visit there in about 20 years. I took the chance and packed as many cameras as possible into my luggage. In this article, I'm going to present to you the photos I took with my Nikon F-501 SLR.

Summer Hot Spots: Blaavand, Denmark (Part Two)

When I was a child, I regularly went to Blaavand, located at the Danish west coast, with my brothers and parents. I stopped going there as I grew up. In 2012 however, we hit the road again. It was my first return visit in about 20 years. I took the chance and packed as many cameras as possible into my luggage. In part two of my journey log, I'm going to show you the pictures I took with my Lomography cameras.

Transient Living: The Craft and the Craftsmen of Denver, Colorado

The people of a city, to me, speak volumes about its culture and sense of community. And that is why I sought out the people who make Denver that much more interesting after the initial period of settling down. My search lead to a few establishments that have contributed to making Denver what it is today. In the second story on Transient Living, I present to you two of such establishments: The Craftsman & Apprentice, and A Small Print Shop.
