Founded in 1550 as a rival to the Hanseatic city of Reval (today: Tallinn) by King Gustav I of Sweden, the town of Helsinki struggled in its infancy. For a long time it remained a small coastal town, overshadowed by the more thriving trade centers in the Baltic region. In order to reduce Swedish influence in Finland, in 1812, Czar Alexander I of Russia moved the capital from Turku which had close ties to Sweden, to Helsinki. Throughout its 450-year history, Helsinki has existed in the crosscurrents of the East and West

What should you see in the center town? Lutheran Cathedral (Tuomiokirkko): The unofficial symbol of the city, this striking white cathedral dominates the central Senate Square. Based on designs by Carl Ludvig Engel and completed in 1852. Uspenski Cathedral: a classical onion-domed Russian church, Uspenski Cathedral serves Finland’s small Orthodox minority and is the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe.

The market place: At the end of Esplanad facing the sea, this open-air market sells fresh fish and produce from all over Finland. In the morning you will be able to buy fruits and vegetables : try the Finnish strawberries, they are excellent ! If you want to imitate Suomi people, eat uncooked peas! You can also buy gifts here: knives made with reindeer corn, Sami’s objects made of wood, and local handicrafts.

Lots of museums: Ateneum Art Museum,, has the largest collection of paintings and sculptures in Finland.. Design Museum : permanent exhibits of Finnish designers, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art., National Museum of Finland, and so on.

Shopping in Helsinki is generally expensive, but fans of Finnish and Nordic design will find plenty of things of interest. Most large shops and department stores are open weekdays from 9AM-9PM. Well if you like design, beware: shopping will be a torture; so many things to buy.
