The factory was projected in 1951 by the architects Mario Passanti and Paolo Perona. It’s basically a huge cube of concrete made of three stories of high windows, standing between a few centenarian trees in a beautiful park…
My first idea was to take pictures only of the outside of the building, being the park closed by a big wall and a fence in front of a not so desert street… But I tried anyway to turn around the park and found a little river which passed under the road and arrived just behind the building in the park… It was quite epic but I made it inside!
And I was stoked! I expected the building to be quite empty, but I found instead much more than an empty box! It was like something had happened many years ago, which had made everybody escape, leaving their work in progress and never coming back! I found a car and a little truck, a whole storey full of weaving machines, sewing machines, stocks of cloth, buttons, patches etc, some suitcases, a mummified dead cat, a calculator bigger than a toaster… Anything and everything… I finished my rolls so fast I had to come back again a few weeks later with my girlfriend (and lomographer fellow), shooting, running here and there like two kids in a toy shop! And I’ll go back again someday for sure!!

My name is Amber Valentine and I have a confession to make: I’m not really a photographer. I have a website full of photographs, a bookshelf full of cameras, film waiting to be developed, and a wall full of framed pictures I’ve taken. Even so, I don’t really consider myself a photographer per se. I think that Lomography is more about the experimentation and the fun of film than it is about the photography, and that experimentation is part of the reason I have embraced Lomography so.
As you may have read in my previous article, I truly fell in love with Lomography when I combined my Fisheye camera with an old Canon AE-1 for magical photographic results. Last summer, I took so many pictures of flowers that it started to become almost boring for me. My waning interest and the coming winter meant that I had to figure out something else to do with my 35mm film.
It had been five years since my last visit to the Côte d'Azur in France. During this period, I took to film photography again. And so for my return, I was looking forward to capturing, with my handy film cameras, some of that special light and blue sea that had drawn so many artists to the Riviera.
Leonard Knight passed away last year but he left an incredible legacy, an embodiment of love, that is Salvation Mountain. From 1984, he painted and remodeled a little hill in the California desert that's colorful as a cupcake and truly meaningful. And if anything ever would have been meant to be shot with Lomo cameras, it would be this psychedelic, holy hill.
My wife and I suffered a family loss in October 2013 so we decided to shift things around and have a celebration of life—a wedding, actually—to associate our loss with the beginning of something positive and memorable. We have been together for nearly 13 years and after getting married, we headed off on a three-month trip to South America and a few other stops to complete a round-the-world loop back to Australia.
