The View from The Staten Island Ferry, NYC

Our 48 hour tour of New York City demanded a view of the Statue of Liberty, even if we didn't have the time to get to see that famous little island up close. When I heard that the Staten Island Ferry was a free 40 minute round trip, I knew we couldn't miss it.

Our 48 hour tour of New York City demanded a view of the Statue of Liberty, even if we didn’t have the time to get to see that famous little island up close. When I heard that the Staten Island Ferry was a free 40 minute round trip, I knew we couldn’t miss it.

The ferry was packed with two basic stereotypes – commuting New Yorkers, sitting somewhat relaxed, reading, resting, waiting to get across; and tourists, standing, snapping photo after photo of lady liberty. We enjoyed the short trip, the many iconic photo opportunities, and the breeze off the water.

While the Staten Island Ferry affords some great angles of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge (among other familiar views), my toy cameras didn’t quite cut it in a few instances where a hefty zoom lens would have been appreciated.

If you’re a tourist (or a bored New Yorker) looking to kill some time but not your wallet, take the ferry, the price is right.
