MTV Exit: My First “Pro” Photography Experience

Cinzinc was the big winner of our MTV Exit competition and got to shoot some big names in the music industry as he and his friends attended the event in grand fashion. Check out his photos as well as his recollection of the event here!

Competition announcements sometimes take a while, or maybe I just ain’t patient enough. I post a comment on the LSI shoutbox regarding the MTV Exit competition because the concert was just days away. Soon enough I receive an email with the subject: Competition comment. “Oh no, was I in trouble?” I thought. Maybe my comment was harsh? Then here comes Tat Tso, announcing the winners, and then I see “Grand prize Winner: Cinzinc” WTF! NO WAY! GRAND PRIZE WINNER?! I could not believe it! I replied asking him if it was true and if it meant I was going to shoot at the event, and he said I was right, oh yeah! I scream happily inside because I was at an office that time.Haha.

Since this was my first “pro” photographer experience, I wanted to do some lomo styles such as redscale and multiple exposures. And of course, only use Lomography cameras such as the almighty LC-A+, Fisheye 2, and Diana F+. I prepared my films and cameras the night before the event, as I was doing so, I just couldn’t wait to get started.

The day came, I got to the venue and right away I was so eager to start shooting. It was pretty hard getting to where I was supposed to be because the crowd was intense, so many attended since it was a free event. Roaming amongst the crowd, I had to be aware of my belongings and the safety of my friends. Finally I meet Ruici and Eve, the MTV representatives that briefed and took care of me and my friends. It started off with a media photoshoot in a little room, while waiting for the performers/artists to come in, it was a funny feeling being surrounded by professional photographers. There they are with their DSLRs, heavy duty gear, and I’m standing with my lomography cameras. Not huge, not looking serious, and the photographers staring at me like “what the hell is he doing?”. Some photographers were curious about my camera, but it seemed like they just snubbed me off. Here come the artists one by one, started snapping away. To get their attention, I had to raise my voice to tell them to look in my direction. Since I was new, and I wouldn’t be seeing these photographers again, I had some fun of my own shouting “Look here, you are an animal!”,“You are the sunshine that shines so bright”, “You are so extremely hot” Some artists seemed shocked seeing lomography camera in a sea of DSLRs.

Then came what I was really waiting for, shooting in front of the stage. At first I got placed at a bad location, far from the stage, in a special media section keeping us protected from the crowd. I was bummed out because of my position, but oh well. At times the crowd got crazy, police rushing into the crowd to handle the situation, it was scary because I was concerned about the safety of me and my friends. Oh, I was still getting teased by other photographers because I was using film. After 15 minutes, I decided to get out of there and head to the VIP section. Yes, I had VIP access.hehe. Then, I got to the front of the stage, with no complaints coming from the security, so that’s when the real deal happened. Every performer is different, and I had to react fast, and when a roll came to an end, I had to change the film even faster. Sometimes I would get worried that the outcome might be bad, or worse, nothing at all. But I’m glad I got some good shots from this event. Just shooting! Enjoy the music and the whole experience!

Bring loads of film, bring flash, and bring your trusty camera. Thank you Lomography and MTV for this awesome experience! I would love to shoot for more events, and that gave me hope to be a lomographer as my career! Keep shooting film, and keep loving it!

Photographer Gilbert Blecken Captures Iconic Musicians on Film

Back in the 1990s, Gilbert Blecken was a big music fan and wrote for his own small music fanzine. He would interview bands in between sound checks and take photographs of them. He was never a professional photographer or worked for a company; he simply did it for his fanzine. Twenty years on, Gilbert’s photographs have matured into an amazing documentation of some of the biggest music icons of that era. We caught up with Gilbert to ask him about these photographs and the fascinating story behind them.

LomoAmigos: The Ting Tings Go Analogue!

The Ting Tings are a musical duo from Manchester who have more pop hits than you can shake a stick at. They are most famous for their 2008 hit "That's Not My Name" which got even the stiffest of people shaking in their seats. The Ting Tings are back with a brand new album called Super Critical. They are big film fanatics (check out their website for proof) so we gave them a Sprocket Rocket Camera and a bunch of film to document their life in sunny IBIZA.
