Aghios Nikolaos

Need a vacation? Take it, but be careful - if you plan to take a rest at home, you can receive a call from your boss at any moment "please, can you come just for 15 minutes, we need your help". So the best plan is to go somewhere really far away, for example - the Crete Island. And if you really plan to go there for your vacation, choose Aghios Nikolaos town, as it is THE BEST resort town in whole Crete (well, at least you can hear that at your tourist information office). And it really is awesome. First of all, Aghios Nikolaos is a coastal town and the capital of Lasithi province (Crete Island is divided into 4 or 5 prefectures). The most amazing fact is that the town is built on the ruins of the ancient city. People call it Saint Nicholas town because Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors and of all of Greece.

What to say? Millions of tourist attractions, best hotels in whole Crete, outstanding views from the mountains and of course, native Taverna food. There is even a lagoon right in the middle of the town, which joins the Cretan Sea just in the other side of the small bridge. Near the traditional boats there are always lots of crazy ducks – if you think they’re friendly, you’re completely wrong. It looks like they are angry since the day the first tourist arrived in “their” town. There are boats that offer round trips to different sightseeing courses, while there are still many things to do even on the ground: from bars and nightclubs to mini-golf courses and pool tables. Of course, lots of natives work in the tourist section, so you can be sure that everyone likes you there (I just loved that feeling). And of course, one thing, that is very important – Aghios Nikolaos has got the blue-star beach, which is very clean and tidy… How to get there? Aghios Nikolaos is accessible from the mainland and the whole of Europe through Nikos Kazantzakis airport and many daily ferry services in Heraklion (the capital of Crete).
