I have been working on a project called Childhood Narratives for a few years and the images are presented here are a subcategory that I call ‘memory’. As the title suggests these are a series of images drawn from my childhood. At the age of 4 years old my parents divorced acrimoniously which had a profound effect on me. I have used photography as a means of exploring those feelings. Some of the images are drawn from ‘actual’ memory and some are drawn from what I regard as ‘feelings ‘ of memory.

One of my prime aims is to depict the chasm that can exist between a child’s world and that of an adult. As Freud states, we can never look back at childhood as a child, thus a chasm exists. This is something I am particularly interested in as I remember the isolation I felt as a child, particularly at school. This was further embedded due to the fact that I lost my hearing sporadically, thus heightening my isolation from the world.

My work is about exploring these feelings of abandonment, isolation, loneliness, longing, waiting and ultimately disappointment.

I worked in medium format. I used a hasselblad 500c with a 80mm lens. Although I have printed these images in the darkroom, all images online are from scanned negatives.

This entry was kindly provided by Christophe Dillinger of Square Magazine dedicated solely to the square format. It is a quarterly, bilingual French and English Magazine now accepting submissions to be featured in the special edition “A Year In Square” which will also be published as a hard copy book due to release on 15th December.
