My Lomo Story: tallgrrlrocks

I've been generally intimidated by those big, sleek DSLRs. When I attempt to use one, I keep worrying if I'm pressing the right buttons and end up stressed! Lomography had me at "Don't worry about any rules," AKA Golden Rule #10, and after the first click, I felt the stress melt away.

My first Lomographic Camera was a Fisheye 2, which I named Dory.

I bought it because I was really amused by the round and distorted images it took. Bringing it everywhere was such a joy! I remember I held my breath before I clicked the shutter for the first time. After that, I thought “That was it? It’s like clicking on a toy camera!” Then of course I realized that in it’s own funky way, it was indeed a toy, haha!

Then came Dirty Diana on my birthday last year, followed a few months later by Dimitry, my LC-A+. I bring them everywhere too, and up to this day, I still hold my breath before clicking their respective shutters, most probably from excitement (just like when you’re about to unwrap a present), and partly to keep my hands steady.

I relish the moments I spend time shooting with my analogue darlings. I find happiness in capturing simple everyday things I witness around me, and I’m only too happy to share them with the world.
Chasing the last remaining daylight bathing my Lomographic desires has become such an enjoyable part of my life, the same way chasing the best bargains on film became an obsession. My vegetables have been evicted from the crisper in my fridge because my little 35s and 120s have taken up residence there (the greens now occupy a higher shelf). I marvel at the fact that I seem to have decreased my acquisition of new shoes because my footwear fund has been diverted to my Must Buy Film fund, and for this I’m not complaining.

Currently, I am keeping my Lomolife the same way as when I first got inot it: exciting, unpredictable and unburdened by rules. And I am glad to be part of a community that doesn’t think it’s weird to tote around more than one camera in one go, and the fact that each different camera has a name.

Lomolove to all!

Hey guys. Tallgrrl I love your article! I relate so much I agree that SLRs are intimidating ;) I fell in love with lomo before I even fully understood that this analog world of talented, like-minded artists existed ;) I'm so glad to be able to share my photos with people who don't look at me with blank expressions when explaining how film is different from digital haha... Glad to be inspired by all of you guys xoxox

I love that your first Diana is called Dirty! I have just got my first for my birthday and we are having a tempestuous relationship at best, I'm not sure what went wrong but 7 pics from 4 films, err not good. i hope that we can work it out so I get the shots as amazing as you x
