Freycinet National Park, Tasmania

Some places on this planet are so beautiful, it hurts just a little when you leave them. But you also know you’re a better person for having been there. Cleaner, almost.

I was lucky enough to spend one week in Coles Bay, which sits at the tip of the Freycinet Peninsular, which is on Tasmania’s east coast. This peninsular is home to the Freycinet National Park, which is where you’ll find Wineglass Bay. They say this is one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. And I have to agree with them, whoever they are.

Coles Bay is a tiny town – a pub, a bakery, a general store. Lots of boats. Damn fine seafood. We rented a small cottage that could have slept a family of 5, but there was just the two of us. We were visited by wallabies most nights, they quite liked the grass in the front yard. From our deck out the front was a beautiful view of The Hazards – the granite mountains that run through the middle of the peninsular. It is these you have to walk over to reach Wineglass Bay. It is a steep climb up and over, and I had jelly legs by the end of it. But what a view from the top!! There are many walks within the national park – short day walks, and if you’re really adventurous, overnight ones as well. We also took a day trip up to the town of Bicheno, mainly to take advantage of their supermarket and butcher, when we discovered the blowhole and another beautiful beach.

I took my Holga 120 CFN with me and shot 5 rolls of film. I got some lovely light leaks and the Kodak 400 VC film captures the blue of the ocean and sky so beautifully. I even tried some long exposure night shots, which have their own special kind of weirdness.

I’d love to go back during the summer to be able to swim in Wineglass Bay. I think that would be very special indeed.
