Lomo'Instant Wide First Impressions: Katphip

Katherine Phipps is a passionate Photography Major who obviously had a grand time with the new Lomo’Instant Wide. She talks about her instant wide experience and shares some of her favorite shots in this short feature.

Please introduce yourself to the Lomo Community.

Hello Lomographers! My name is Katherine, and I recently joined Lomo USA to help with customer service. I recently finished by BFA in Photography here in NYC. I also love working with clients to capture their experiences with my vision, be it a wedding, concert or party. I have been shooting film since I was 16, processing and printing my own photos until I recently moved to shooting color and using scanning technologies. Analog photography is my true love.

What was your first impression of the Lomo’Instant Wide?

It’s a fun looking camera! It’s lightweight, and there are a few easy to understand control functions.

Please tell us about your experience shooting with it. Did you encounter any challenges?

People love seeing it, they love being photographed by it! Clients, bands, and fellow party goers alike. There’s truly something special about getting to watch the image appear after about 45 seconds. It renders colors really well, and once you get the hang of the exposure system, you realize you have a world of possibilities that come to fruition before you eyes.

Please tell us about the photos you took.

I’ve been taking the Instant Wide to music events with me: Last weekend, The Knocks at All Things Go Fall Classic in DC and this week I shot Sofi Tukker at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn as a part of the CMJ Music Marathon. I’m especially in love with the quick portrait of Sophie and Tucker backstage. The photos from the after party of a wedding I photographed are especially sweet as well. Something about the candidness of shooting instant film. The couple is really excited for me to send them back.

Which one is your favorite? Why?

The whole shoot at Baby’s All Right was great. It was awesome seeing how the camera and film handled the lights at the show. It was a really crazy experience trying to document the whole thing with those 10 exposures, but I think this made me plan each shot to make them all more unique. I don’t think that candid shot after the show would be as awesome had I been shooting with another camera. Especially not a DSLR which I think would be someone’s go to in this situation.

What is your favorite feature of the Lomo’Instant Wide?

All of the settings. It gives me a lot of control over the image, and allows you to shoot in all kinds of lighting situations. But also the simple process of shooting instant film. It’s so fun! I also had the pleasure of testing it in the studio with a beauty dish using its PC socket and that was really fun. Once we figured out the light, the shots we were able to create with the Instax film and flash were SO beautiful.

For what photo opportunities would you recommend it?

Any and all portrait situations. It’s a pleasure and a joy to be in front of and behind the lens with this one. It does a little bit of the talking for you also, so few people seem to know that instant cameras are still a thing that exist and so they want to be photographed by it which as an event photographer is such a refreshing thing.

What advice would you give to someone who will be using it for the first time?

Take the time to learn the basics of analog photography to get the most out of this camera. Be fearless!
