The New Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens can create the most intimate of portraits even at the most unusual of settings. Morgane of Lomogarphy France takes it for a spin at Galerie d’Anatomie Comparée et de Paléontologie, a museum in Paris.

What are your first impressions of the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens ?

I had already tried its old brother, the Petzval 85 Art Lens. But to be hones, they are both really different. I had fun with the bokeh control ring. But after spending time in the front of my computer for doing this selection, I felt a bit dizzy and my eyes were “bokheting.”

How was your experience shooting with it?

I really liked my time with this Petzval. To be honest, I’m not telling you this because I’m working for Lomography but because I love photography in general (I need to confess: I own a digital camera. Don’t blame meee!). I mean I love photography BUT I’m not claiming I’m a photographer. I’m only taking pictures because I have a special relationship with the time and the dimension of memories. I like taking my time and shooting one or two pictures but I’m not a “kalachnikov photographer” which means I don’t use the burst mode. With the Petzval, you really need to take your time and that’s why I appreciate this lens. I mean you can also shoot quickly because the focusing knob is really easy to use and smooth. But with the Petzval, you have the feeling of being a photographer. Maybe it’s its history and the way we use the lens. It was also funny because I had the feeling of wearing a gold bar on my neck and I was sometime quite suspiscious about the people who were staring at me!

I also have to tell you it was my first “real” shoot and my brother Dimitri was really helpful. So as it was my first shoot and as we were doing it together, it was better and I really liked the time we spent together.

Kindly tell us something about the photos you took. What did you decide to photograph using the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens?

We wanted to shoot in a special place. I’ve already used the Petzval 85 in this place and as the museum is amazing, we decided to shoot there even though the weather was really really hot! ! With all the skeletons in the background, I used the different bokeh levels.

Now that you have experienced using the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens, what other subjects do you think would be perfect to shoot with it? ?

Now that I tried the lens, I would like to do some new projects, more refined. Some portraits or other kinds of pictures. This shoot really helped me to feel more confident so let’s see where this experience will bring me !

What advice could you give first time users of the Petzval 58 ?

Don’t open too wide. I shot a lot with the lame f/4 because I like to have a sharp subject. First I was focusing and then I was playing with the ring and testing the different levels. So take your time and expect people to stare at you.
