Every photographer knows who Annie Leibovitz is – now, let’s get to know the lomographic versión of her: Susie Lomovitz! Take a look in her interesting outlook in life with that half-Venezuelan, half-Spanish tinge! Fall in love with her gorgeous photos and her outlook in life!
Hello!!! My lomo-name is Susie Lomovitz, but in my ID I’m Susana Rodrigo Durán. I was born in Venezuela, my family is from Spain, where I moved six years ago, so I can say I’m half Venezuelan half Spaniard, and I love both countries. What else can I say about me? I’m an art director and I was working in an advertisement agency till last month, now I’m working in the department of communication of a new company, and it’s really nice.
I like to travel, to draw, to dance – even I’m not really good at it, I like beauty, flowers. I love to take pictures with my lomo cameras… and I love my boyfriend.
Ah! I’m 27 years old and my birthday is December 28th!
There’s always an interesting story to every Lomographer – what would be your Lomo story?
Oh! My Lomo story is the story of luck!!!
I gave my boyfriend a Diana for his birthday and I fell in love with that camera. One year later my brother gave me the Diana Deluxe Kit just because, and the funny thing was that I saw him going out from the store with the big beautiful present and I was like “what are you doing here?”, and he was like “oh… here you are, a present for you”.
I was so happy with my beautiful Diana and a few days later I went to a Lomo-party where I won a Supersampler and a Fisheye with submarine case in a raffle, just for filling out a ticket!!!
In a week I went from zero Lomo cameras to three!!! So lucky!
Aaaaand… a few months later my boyfriend won an L-CA in a photo contest and he gave it to me, an L-CA!!!!!! 4 CAMERAS!!!! I’M A LOMO-LUCKY GIRL!!!
What is the reason behind your Lomo name?
Susie Lomovitz is my little tribute to Annie Leibovitz. I was not a big fan but I went to an exhibition of her work and I was surprised myself!
In the first floor of the gallery was her known work, Demi Moore’s famous naked pregnant picture and some other Rolling Stone covers. But, in the second floor I discovered her most beautiful pictures, her family, her friends, her beloved Susan Sontag. Those pictures were so real and very touching, so I came up with the idea of Susie Lomovitz… she inspired me in many ways, not just for the name.
Why analog? Why not digital?
Analog is unique, extraordinary, funny, exciting, magical, wonderful, joyful… digital is not.
Can you tell about your best Lomo shot. What, where, and why this photo?
It’s a tough one to decide – “THE BEST”, it’s hard to say. Maybe I change my mind in a few seconds but right now I’m going with: Gondolieri, Venice, summer 2009. Because of the colors, the light, because they are extraordinary… because Venice is beautiful and unique!!!
The truth is that I really like this photo but the best is coming, I’m sure I haven’t snapped my best shot yet. ;)
If you were a Lomo camera, what would you be and why?
Nice question! If I was a Lomo camera I would be a Diana called Susana! The Diana is beautiful outside and inside. That elegant retro style, and that amazing flash. The Diana can adapt herself to many circumstances and the results are always nice. And, if Diana gets into a room, no one can’t take their eyes off of her.
What is your Lomo style?
Freeeeeee Style, joyful style, happy style, beauty style.
FREESTYLE above all else!
The Lomography staff is reading this interview right now, and I’m sure they’ll be very interested in your suggestions – what else do you want to see in the “revamped” Lomography website? Your own lomowall in your lomohome, perhaps? Monthly free piggies? Anything! Remember… they are reading this right now.
Hello Lomography Staff!
My own lomowall in my Lomohome could be great! To know who liked your photos could be nice too, and to know when your friends upload new pictures!!! THAT WOULD BE REALLY NICE!
And maybe if each one could customize the background of their Lomohomes… I have to confess: I’m addicted to Lomography.com, so, if it gets better, it could get worse. ;)
There’s a Lomo Legend that a forgotten Lomo Genie Bottle is lying around the world somewhere out there. If you find this, you only get to choose three Lomo wishes – a Lomo camera that you currently do not own, any film of your choice, and your dream location. What camera? What film? And where in the world would you spend these Lomo wishes?
Hello Genie, my first wish is a Pink Lubitel. Oh! Thank you Genie! My second would be an an endless supply of colour slide film, 400 iso, 120mm. Oh, wait! If it’s endless, I’ll never get to develop it… make it 100 photos please, that’s enough. Thank you!
And where in the world? Somewhere sunny, with beautiful vegetation and flowers, nice and happy people walking around, warm weather and a nice long beach… Oh Genie, this is paradise!!! Thank you again!!!
Hold on, there’s a fourth wish – who among our fellow Lomographers would you like to collaborate with for this “wish project”, and why?
Wow Genie, there are many people doing a wonderful work out there… I don’t know yet, I’m thinking about it. I’ll text you with my answer, I promise!
Just for kicks – Does your Mom know that you like smelling films and that you’re into Lomography?
My mom knows about it, but she doesn’t know what this is all about… and it’s better that way :D.
P.S. You can find me on Facebook as Su Rodrigo.
