Packed with surfboards and a 4x4 we traveled the entire coast from the North of Tamarindo to the south that dead ends at Mal Pais, and then back up the coast to the north to end the trip at the Arenal Volcano. With a fisheye and the fisheye water housing the trip was an amazing experience. The only problem was a lack of film and the absence of a secure strap for the fisheye housing. Costa Rica is paradise...adventure is on tap daily!
Costa Rica is HOT! Bring trunks, tank-tops, bikini’s, flip flops, hats, sneakers for the jungle, bug spray, and gallons of SPF 60 sunscreen. We bathed in the paint like substance and still came back rediciously tan. Plan your trip from San Jose and head out on your chosen journey. It’s a safe country, but always remember to protect anything of value. I also recommend a strong knowledge of Spanish or traveling with someone who does.
The locals are kind patient people, but are very limited in their ability to help in the more remote areas.
Our goal was to hit as many surf breaks from north to south as possible in a three week time span. If surfing is not your thing Costa Rica offers a little bit of everything: snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, kayaking, bird watching, jungle tours, canopy adventures, ATV tours, waterfalls, sport fishing, spas, etc.
The rainy season starts in May and continues on through October, so the best bet would be from January to May. However, the rainy season could be just as fun and beautiful as any other time and the prices are usually lower seeing as it is “off season”. We stayed in tree houses all along the coast for very reasonable prices and cabina’s that are welcoming to travelers. I suggest ending your trip in Arenal Volcano area. The hotsprings and rain forest’s are unreal. Swim in the waterfalls and wander the lush jungles as only mother nature could provide in the wonderful land of Costa Rica. Any search engine on the internet will link you to places to stay and visit depending on your budget. It truly is paradise and make sure to take as many lomography cameras and film that you can pack!
