Finely Focus on the Fisheye No. 2 Flash

4

I test and compare three popular flashes with the internal flash on the Lomography Fishey No. 2 camera. I look at one subject at various distances.

I did several “shootouts” comparing some flashes with different cameras. I used and LC-A+, a Holga 135, and a Fisheye 2. I used Kodak Gold 200 on all of them. I tested the ColorSplash flash, the RingFlash, and the Holga 15B flash designed specifically for the Holga 135 series. I used a homemade diffuser for the ColorSplash flash for some of the closeup shots. I used the Ringflash diffuser in some of the closeup shots as well. These are the exposure indexes for the Holga 15B and the ColorSplash flash.

LSI doesn’t provide the guide number or exposure index for the Ringflash, but we can use these tests to compare. For the Fisheye 2 I also used the internal flash. Again, LSI doesn’t provide a guide number or exposure index for the Fisheye internal flash, but we can use these results to compare.

These are the results for the Fisheye 2:

“Fisheye 2 Internal Flash 6 Inches” by gvelasco

Note: Notice the signature lower-right shadow caused by the protruding lens.

“Fisheye 2 ColorSplash 6 Inches” by gvelasco

Note: Notice how the ColorSplash flash at least moves the dreaded shadow to the bottom of the picture.

“Fisheye 2 ColorSplash with Diffuser 6 Inches” by gvelasco

Note: Notice how the homemade diffuser “spreads out” the light and gets rid of the dreaded shadow at six inches. It also reduces harsh reflections.

“Fisheye 2 Ringflash 6 Inches” by gvelasco

Note: Notice how even the lighting is with the Ringflash.

“Fisheye 2 Ringflash with Diffuser 6 Inches” by gvelasco

Note: Notice how nicely the diffuser softens the light at this distance.

“Fisheye 2 Holga 15B 6 Inches” by gvelasco

“Fisheye 2 Internal Flash 1 Meter” by gvelasco

Note: Notice the oval flash pattern and the dreaded shadow from the protruding lens.

“Fisheye 2 ColorSplash 1 Meter” by gvelasco

Note: Notice the oval flash pattern.

“Fisheye 2 ColorSplash with Diffuser 1 Meter” by gvelasco

Note: Notice how the homemade diffuser spreads out the flash so that you don’t have the harsh oval flash pattern. It also decreases the reach of the flash. This might have come out better with 400 ASA film.

“Fisheye 2 Ringflash 1 Meter” by gvelasco

Note: At one meter the Ringflash without the diffuser is only slightly more powerful than the ColorSplash with the diffuser, and it doesn’t have a better flash pattern.

“Fisheye 2 Ringflash with Diffuser 1 Meter” by gvelasco

Note: Notice how even at one meter, the Ringflash is too weak to use with the diffuser with 200 ASA film. I usually use at lease 400 ASA with my Fisheye 2, especially if I know I’m going to be using a flash.

“Fisheye 2 Holga 15B 1 Meter” by gvelasco

“Fisheye 2 Internal Flash 2 Meters” by gvelasco

“Fisheye 2 ColorSplash 2 Meters” by gvelasco

“Fisheye 2 Ringflash 2 Meters” by gvelasco

“Fisheye 2 15B 2 Meters” by gvelasco

Note: At two meters the Holga 15B still has good reach and the oval (rectangular actually) flash pattern is spread out enough so that it’s not distracting.

Observations: The Ringflash is clearly designed for close up work and is the best choice for the very closeset shots. The ColorSplash works well close with the diffuser and acceptably at two meters, so it’s actually the most flexible. The Holga 15B has the best reach. I didn’t do any tests involving some of the more unique features of the Fisheye 2 like “B” setting, second curtain sync, or multiple flash capabilities – using both the Ringflash and the Holga 15B for instance. The multicolor Ringflash effects only work within six inches or so, otherwise the colors just smear together. So, I didn’t even test those. Because of it’s extremely wide field of view and relatively slow lens, the Fisheye is a great camera for testing flash coverage.

Very thourough as usual. I am glad used the ringflash. I am thinking about getting it. I will remember to use it for close up shots.

Nice investigation! But those numbers, what do they mean? Is that the ideal aperture setting? I don't get it, I feel dumb now!
