See Seth (and his band, The Undertow) this Sunday at the Lomography Gallery Store LA's World Pinhole Day Party!
Seth Pettersen is a native Californian whose love of surfing, music and all things analogue were instilled early on. In 2003, Seth recorded a home demo called “Out of the Picture”, on which he played every instrument. Just this month Seth released his strongest solo album to date, “So Fully”, filling out his sound with The Undertow, a rotating group of musician friends Seth grew up with, in his hometown of Ventura, California.
Catch Seth this Sunday April 25th at 7pm celebrating World Pinhole Day at the Lomography Gallery Store LA.
Name: Seth Pettersen

How long have you been a Lomographer (or are you new to this whole thing?).
I am a brand new Lomographer, this was my first time ever shooting with the LC-A+. I had a 5 minute tutorial and I started shooting immediately after that.
The strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had.
I almost had a paparazzi moment when my girlfriend and I were cruising down the freeway and we thought we saw Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian in a convertible BMW. I got up next their car to take the shot, but it wasn’t them at all. Just an attractive couple who looked like them. It could have been rad to try and sell a Lomo style pic to People Magazine. Stars: They’re just like us!
If your photos shown here could have a soundtrack of three songs, what would they be (song title & artist please).
• So Long Blue – Tall Tales and the Silver Lining
• Peeny Wally – Soul Defenders
• Foggy Notion – Velvet Underground
From your photos, you must have gotten your hands on the Krab Underwater Housing and took it out surfing with you. Aside from the Pacific Ocean, where else did you shoot?
I was able to take the camera with me to a lot of shows around Southern California. Everywhere I went I tried to take some shots. Echo Park, Isla Vista, Somis, Ventura, Camarillo, Carlsbad, Long Beach, HWY 101, Interstate 5.
We hear your next album cover photo was taken with the LC-A+… tell us how that happened!
I did in fact score a very sweet underwater shot of the sunlight breaking through the surface. However, It doesn’t look like this will be the cover shot.
Other than playing the Lomography Gallery Store LA’s World Pinhole Day party this Sunday, how else do you plan to celebrate the roots of photography?
The LC-A+ has really inspired me to take shoot more film and move away from the Digital stuff. The vibe of film is unparalleled in the digital age. I will probably purchase the Oktomat when I come play the Lomo Store.
The absolute best surf spot in Southern California, and why?
If I was the last man on Earth, I would build a shack made of the reeds that grow next to the train tracks at Trestles. I would spend my summers surfing Lowers and Churches. In the winter I would move up the coast and occupy all the mansions of Rincon cove and get pitted every morning.
As someone who also recorded more than one album completely on their own… what other DIY/Analogue aspects are there to your life?
I have to make something everyday. If I don’t get the chance to be creative in some way, I will go insane. I try to express myself in everything I do whether it be writing songs, performing songs, painting, sewing, surfing, skating, shooting the shit, or taking photos. I have to feel it. If it never leaves the computer screen, its harder to feel.
What’s next for Seth Pettersen and The Undertow?
In June, the band I play that I play in: Franklin for Short, will be heading out to the East Coast to open up 10 shows for the wonderfully talented Kings Of Convenience. When I get back I plan on playing some house parties and recording a new solo album.
Your advice for soon-to-be Lomographers.
1. Invest in a flash! This is a crucial piece of equipment, and the color filters are tons of fun!!
2. When loading the LC-A+ into the Krab underwater housing, do not let any single drop of water in with the camera. A very small amount of water inside the housing will cause a massive amount of fog on the lens.
